scents and calls

I am looking at experimenting with scents and calls this season and wonder what has worked (equipment and method) for other folks -

I will be hunting mostly on private land, some in the Texas hill country, some out in west texas, and some in the red river basin.

Without a doubt, grunt calls will work and all the rattling I've seen down on shows about Texas, you probably will have success with them too.

In PA, soft grunting has worked the best for me. I usually only grunt when I have a visual on the deer I intend to work. Rarely have I had deer come in out of nowhere just cause I'm grunting but it has happened. When the rut rolls around, I'll throw in some estrous doe bleats with the grunts. Makes bucks think that a rival buck has a doe working in his territory.

RE: scents and calls

I have been using those "moist-earth" scent disks that I hang from my hat, and I've found them to be great as a cover-up. Additionally, I just picked up some fox-urin that I'll try to use as an additional cover (pour it on my boots/ soles) ....I've read a fair amount of positive things regarding the fox urin. I'd stay away from skunk because although it is not a threat to Deer specifically, it represents an animal that is distressed and may make the deer even more wary. Additionally, I wash all of my clothes in scent free / UV block detergent and shower in scent free/ anti-bacterial soap for 2-3days before hunting. I hope this helps.
