RE: Bow string Changed ? How much?
I'll throw a nickel into the pot. I work in a Gander shop myself. Our strings vary a lot, but I'd have to say that for most strings, installed, you are looking at a max of $20 and a low of about $10. It depends on what string they have. Most of ours are D75 or BCY450 material made by Tailor Made. Not the greatest, but just as good as most factory strings in most cases.
And how good are the guys in the shop? Can't speak for all of them, but our particular store has 4 out of 5 guys that do better work than many proshops. Mainly because we have one PRO shooter, and the other 3 have worked in shops for several years before coming here. Their archery experience is pretty impressive to me, for such a young group. I'm the staff shooter, been one for 12 years now and was actually a sales rep for one year for Pearson Archery. One guy, a young lad of 21, has a father that was a sales rep for a lot of years for Hoyt, and Ten Point Crossbows. We may be an exception, but I'm lucky to work with these guys. I even learn from the young-uns, and sometimes the customers. |

I'll second BGfisher, I've had work done at a Gander Mountain store. Sure, some of the guys didn't really have a clue, but 2 of them were very knowledgeable and knew their way around a bow.
But then again, I've never been to a "pro" shop, we only have hunting store with archery departments around here. |

alright, thanx guys that was a great help :):D

BGfisher, it's a relief to hear that your Gander Mountain has a reputable archery staff. The one by my father's house in West Mifflin, PA has pretty much the opposite. They have one guy that has a very know-it-all type attitude but his knowledge is less than minimal. There are some guys there that are eager to help, but they just don't have a lot of knowledge. If you're ever in western PA stop in and maybe you could help them out, because they need it.

Bry, that's why I don't make blanket statements that "this proshop is better than that" or anything else. I do know that there are people in "proshops" that aren't that astute and the same goes for "boxstores". And then some are better than others. It's just a fact of life. Most places employ people with at least a general knowledge of bows and bowhunting. It's the ones who have 3D and target shooters (generally staff or co-op shooters) in them that shine. These guys usually KNOW how to set up equipment and attend to some of the smaller details. It's the attention to detail that makes the difference.
In our store, we sell a guy a bow and accessories. Mount everything. Almost all rests are set for centershot using a laser. Set nocking points using a level. Small details. Then we like to get the person on our range (up to 35 yards indoors) and at least do some rough tuning and sighting for 20 yards. I personally like to show new people some ideas on form such as hand/grip orientation. And I'm a real bitch when it comes to getting drawlength close. Anyway, all this may take upwards of 2 hours for that one customer---one on one til the sale is complete. I even do this stuff on my time off so it's mainly a hobby for me. I NEED A RAISE. A couple of the other guys are pretty good, too. Not quite as picky as I, but I wouldn't be afraid to let them work on my equipment. And I am picky. And if you got a problem with the boys at your store then I might suggest you tactfully mention it to one of the managers. They are pretty good at stressing customer service and relations. |

It sounds like you guys have the right idea at your store. From what I have seen the same time and care is not taken at the store by my father's house. I would mention something, but I'm not there very often and from what I can tell the cocky know-it-all guy is the one in charge of the archery area. What killed me was when I was there over Thanksgiving a guy came in saying he was given a Bear Whitetail hunter and wanted to get it set up for him. This know-it-all guy tells him there is no way to adjust draw lenght on those bows and he wouldn't waste his time working on it. The one nice thing about that bow is that it is highly adjustable! Oh well, maybe next time I'm out there I'll mention it to a manager if that guy is still there. I'll let him know they should contact your store for some tips so they can get it together. Keep up the good work.
