Shed Hunting Question

Yesterday I was out shed hunting and came to the fence line where the property that i hunt ends and i dont have permission to hunt the other side of the fence. Well just on the other side of the fence there was a huge 6pt. antler. I left the antler (witch was very hard to do). But i dont think anyone will find this antler because no one hunts this land. What should i do? Leave it there of go back and hop the fence and pick it up. Im not sure. I cant get a hold of the land owner to ask him if i can go over the fence to get the shed, he is never home and lives like 25 miles from me. What would some of you shed hunters do?

Don't hop the fence. Use a stick and pick it up. LOL

that is funny because i actually thought about that today. with there being snow on the ground they would tell if they went in there. Im going to go back tonight at dark and get it with a stick. If it is still there and i get it i will put a picture of it on here.

Trespassing is just that. If you can't reach it with a stick and you feel that you have to have it go ask the land owner and if he says no than leave it there. Maybe by showing the owner that you have respect for him you may get the permission to hunt it.

I have to agree with gutshot....If we as hunters continue to disrespect landowners, no matter how simple to us it may seem, we will continue to run into "fences" as we hunt.If we would grow some ceuth and respect landowners for they are the key to our hunting success whether we like it or not unless you were born rich and can buy your own land. I have a great respect for all of you who can actually suck up your wants and ask a landowner for any sort of permission. You never know maybe one day they will start saying, " You know I have this one guy that hunts on my land that actually asks me if he can hop a fence to get a pair of sheds." Instead of. " Can you belive this ahole just jumped my fence and did whatever he wanted to on my land?" You never know.Plus I believe in living guilt free.

Back home... fencelines were the two landowners property. Jump the fence and get the shed! Fence lines are in play. This rule came about to benefit us while turkey hunting. If the bird came to the edge of the fenceline "dead bird." Neighbors can do the same to us. It's only fair.

RE: Shed Hunting Question

Try and get permission. It's not only the land owner that you are taking from but maybe also the shed hunter who does have permission. I know I am not happy when someone or sledders sneak on the land I have permission for.

I will ask permission for land in my area that is not posted whichs make hunting and shed hunting legal without permission in ND. I want to get to know the land owners or should say, I want them to get to know me. If they ever do post their land which is happening more and more, my foot is already in the door. It is much easier keeping permission then getting it once something is posted and slobs are the reason for it being posted.

If land is not posted outside of my area, I will grab a shed or check it out. In no way am I saying it is wrong to do it on non posted land, but if that land has promise, it is wiser in the long run to seek permission in your area. For shed hunting you need access to quite a bit of land to do well. Get permission now or someone will beat you to it. Most landowners are very good and only give us permisson and won't let others on.

Just so happens... yesterday, I thought I could make out a shed in some posted land I didn't have permission for. Would have been real easy to just run out and grab it. Instead I got lucky this morning and did get a hold of the land owner. He said go a head.

I drove by the spot today and took my 5 year old daughter for a walk to check it out. She has been asking to going shed hunting with me. She found her first two sheds and it was a great time. Sneaking out and grabbing the shed would have cheated me out of sharing something special with my daughter. Doing it right does pay off.
