Question about buck that lost its horns
 

During the last week of PA's late season, i killed a buck that lost its horns. It was a nice size deer and had knots on its head that were a little bigger than a quarter. I was just wondering if its possible to judge how big the buck was by the knots on its head. There was a nice 8 point in the area and i was curious if it could have been him. Thanks.

I don't know how to judge the size by just the knots. You should be able to make some sort of a judgement by checking the teeth of the deer to see how old it was and then comparing its age to what bucks in your area normally wear for head gear at that age.

Sounds like it could have been a 12 point, 220 class buck.

Where in the Huntington area are you from? I hunt in Mapleton Depot every year, have a friend that has around 100 acres and I lived in Mapleton for a few years back in the late 90's.

I live up Big Valley, near Mill Creek. We own land in Mill Creek and this year some guy from Mapleton shot a monster on the neighboring property. From what i heard, it was 14 point w/20" spread but thats just a rumor thats going around.

i don't know about knots. it should have 2 pedastals you should be able to tell how much mass it had at the bases.

Checking the teeth would defiantly tell you a little more about the deers age and would probably be your best bet. But a buck that has large holes after dropping their antlers most likely had a large base on his antlers.
