Long Range Practice

The last 3 or 4 weeks before season I like to do all my practicing at a minimum of 40 yds, seems to make those 15-30 yd shots a gimme.Anyone else try this? Not saying I'd shoot game that far away, just practice. It really makes you pay attention to the little details.

I pratice out to 50 yds. This makes 40 and under shots a walk in the park! I will continue to practice this way.

i knew a guy who had a 70 yard pin. He said he was as accurate with it than any of the other ones he had. Thats awesome he said he took some nice bucks with it.

Long yardage shots during practice sessions will help with your control and holding, but don't think your short shots will be a snap. If your a tree stand hunter, your angle on the target increases and so does the difficulty in shot placement. Pick a spot as you do on long shots and you be on the mark for shorter ranges.

Good Hunting...

I like to practice back to 50 yds. I walk away from my target, stop, and turn around. Judge the distance and shoot. I use one pin, so shooting varying distance helps practice knowing where to hold.

Thats the right idea. You are right I pratice from thirty yards 98 percent of the time, and now I have started out to forty yards. It helps you consintrate better.

I practice out to 60yds and you are right it does seem to help on your short yardage.

I shoot out to 45 yards. Hunting and practice.

I usually shoot one group at 20 yards to start. Helps instill confidence. I then shoot all my groups, except the last one, from 30 and 40 yards. I then shoot my last group from 20 yards. Hopefully I can end the session on a good note.

I have never shot a deer further than 25 yards. I hunt in southern pines and hardwoods. It is thick and not many long shots. This practice sessions suits my hunting situation. If I were hunting out west or along large fields I would lengthen the practice distance out to 50 yards. Just my take on the situation.

good hunting

i practice at 50 yds. exclusively 95 percent of the time, when i move up to 20 and 30 it seems like a slam dunk, have to worry about busting knocks then.

I do a lot of shooting out to 45 yards and farther but I never stop practicing those supposed slam dunk 25 or 15 yard shots.

Daily, unless your friends other pins are further than 70 yds you can bet he shoots better with them. That might be possible if he has target panick at 20 and somehow is not a factor at 70 yds but seems real unlikely to me.

I actually used to group better at 40 than 20. it was a form of target panic , i guess i had a mental mindset that it was easy at 20 yrds so i just released without quite being on target. I practic out to 60 and am sighted to 70. I took my Best mule deer in AZ open scrub/desert at 70yrds.

I only use one pin and take it out to 50 yards. When hunting the longest shot I will take is 35 yards but its fun to take 50 yard shots.I am still in the kill zone at 50 yards.

I'll practice from 70yrd just to break up the route. 2 shots at 30, 2 at 50, 2 at 70, then 2 at 20.

Did you know that the English archers where accurate at hitting a standing man at 250 yrds and the Great Khan of the Mongols, better known as Genghis Khan taught his men to use composite bows (70 - 160 lb. draw weight) and released the bowstring with a thumb ring that increased the killing range of the bow to 275 metres (300 yards.) The maximum range of their bows was about 550 metres (600 yards).

I usually practice at 30 to 50 yards. It is better to practice at varying ranges(especially when using a peep sight) because your anchor point will change slightly when going from changing from 20 to 40 yards. Now that I have switched to the No-Peep I do most of my shooting from 50 to 60 yards. I like shooting from 50 to 60 yards with broadheads as this will really show any flaw in your form or release resulting in poor broadhead flight.

I practice and hunt out to 70yrds. I have a 5 pins out to 60 yrds, and holding that 60yrd pin at the top of the shoulders is enough to drive it home at 70yrds.

I have 20,30 and 40 yard pens. I'm just now confident in my ability at 40 so I may start practicing out to 50. In hunting situtiations, 30 yards is my max.

RE: Long Range Practice

I used to practice out to 60yds now i practice from 20 to 40yds. It is weird though i notice a lot of times my pattern is better at 40 than 20 but i think that its all mental......
i have only shot at a deer once about 50 yds and i missed it clean but that was a long time ago when i was young and full of the old i can hit anything attitude, now i only shoot when i feel it is a good ethical shot........

Hunting with a bow brings about a different challenge on every hunt!!!
