Need some advise on a bow.
OK here goes.................... I live and hunt in Ohio. As most of you know, it is legal to hunt with a crossbow during the archery season in Ohio. This is where I need some advise. I hunt with a crossbow and have for several years. I'm not a lazy person as some say crossbow hunters are I just never had the opportunity to bow hunt as a youngster and well a crossbow was a way to get out and hunt during archery season here. I have a love of the outdoors and hunting and fishing are the best things in the world to do. I am very interested in buying a good bow maybe not the top of the line but something mid range and getting good enough to hunt with it next season. I have shot a few of my buddies bows and can hit a target but I would love to have one of my own set up for me and knowing where it shoots. Do any of you have any advise on a good bow to start with? Like I said I am not a complete amateur but need a little friendly advise on a bow. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
thanks John |

I would go for a PSE. I hunt with a PSE and it shoots more consistant than my dad's Mathews. Make sure you are shooting carbon arrows with fethered fletching. (not plastic)

RE: Need some advise on a bow.
First of all set yourself a budget for your bow and accessories ,remember that your accessories are going to be in the $200.00 range. Then go to a proshop and check out every bow in your price range ,have yourself measured for your drawlength.
Try shooting as many as you possibly can and then try narrowing down your choice's to about 4 bow's . Shoot the 4 bow's of your choice again and again ,this will begin to give you a feel for the bow ,which will make it a bit easier to narrow your selection down to a couple bow's . Then shoot the 2 you have chose a couple more time's side by side. Then you should be able to figure out for yourself which bow feel's best to you, because this is about you and no one else.Go with your gut feeling and don't let anyone pursuade you to choose something different, not even the shop help. Just remember to keep a around $200.00 for accessories . Good luck with choosing your new bow ,and keep us in the loop. I hope this help's nubo |
RE: Need some advise on a bow.
There are a lot of good mid price range bows out there and most pro shops will have them.
If you want a complete package then look at the Bowtech Tomcat. Also have a look at the Diamond Rapture also made by Bowtech so the quality is going to be there. Best thing I can suggest is go to a pro shop and shoot as many bows in your price range as you can and select the one that feels best for you. |
RE: Need some advise on a bow.
My pick would be the Hoyt Ultrasport, Probably one of the best bows you can get for the money. There are many others as well. Probably run you about 300 to 350 for the bare bow, then you would have to set it up. That might cost as much as you paid for the bow depending on what you go with, but it doesn't have to be that expensive.
You could also look at some used bows as well. The most important part is to make sure the bow fits you from the get go, so go to a good shop that can help you out.. Paul |

I would look at diamond and reflex. Both are backed by the big guns and have some of the same technology. Also now would be a good time to pick up a good used bow.

i second Reflex, you can't beat the price. That or if you want to spend more go with hoyt or bowtec.

Another good bow for the money IMO is a Parker. But a PSE would be ok too. Ithink everyone I know has had a PSE, including myself, And had no complaints.
