RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
ORIGINAL: datamax Atlasman - you are wrong. Go out and buy a new handgun or rifle today and try to sell it tommorrow - it will only fetch 75% or less of the value you paid today. While its true that some guns increase in value over time, you have to keep them many years to see this - its not instant appreciation in value I could sell every gun in my case tommorow and get pretty damn close to what I paid for them........and some I could get more. A gun is an investment. They go down in value a little bit and then stay there for a loooooong time.....then they go up in value. Bottom line is if you take good care of a gun you can always get good money back for it. Take immaculate care of a new bow you get tommorow and in 5-10 years you will be lucky if you can give it away. |
RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
Well although i didn't spend as much money as some others did, i have no regret on the price i paid for my Hoyt ($550)
I have noticed that some of the prices are getting little high as of lately but isn't that anything to do with the time of the year? |
RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
I have 2 identical Dartons that are like 10 & 7 years old so started looking at new bows, all models. No hurry, I am a shopper when it comes to my tackle (get that from the wife).
I just went to the bargain cave (on line) at Cabelas & they had just what I wanted. It just happened to be a Darton (even better) & I got it, a Dz. Arrows for $150.00 delivered. Love it, single cam 60#s & took 4 animals this year with it-my other 2 bows started my son-in-law Bowhunting this year & a teen age lad also. No need to sell them-they still get plenty of use. Oh, the son-in-law got his 1st Biggame also. I shopped around for my Daughter (she starts this year to Bowhunt) & found a perfect Bow for her-45#s, 1/2 dz. arrows, sight & bowquiver for $150.00. Bow was new-never shot (on sale) & normally $250 just for the bow. Good buys are out there for what you want. No different than buying a car. I was in the Archery retail for over 15 years & the top of the line Target/Hunting bows then were $200. I agree, they seem to be a little high BUT so is a loag of bread. Good luck. Oh, it does help to vent now & then....I am getting ready to take my CHEAP Bow on a hunting trip for wild hogs in March.... |
RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
I agree that guns hold their value better than bows, but there are many reasons why. First, guns don't really wear out like bows can. Sure, if you have a 25/06 or a big magnum and shoot lots of loads with slow-burning powder, and don't clean the barrel regularly you can do some damage. Shoot lots of really hot loads in some guns and they will get a little loose or the bolt lugs might set back. Most of what guys do to guns is cosmetic damage, which is fairly easy to spot. That, plus there really hasn't been all that much of a huge difference in weapons for a much longer time. An '03 Springfield,'98 Mauser, or a Model 12 Winchester can still pretty much do what most of the new short mags or shotguns can do, and they all make about the same amount of noise when you shoot them.
On the other hand, I shoot my bows on a regular basis, almost every day. I shoot less than 50 rounds out of my rifle each year, often much less. I guess I think the amount of recreation I get out of my bows is worth it because of the amount of time I spend shooting. It is pretty difficult (and meaningless) to shoot a high powered rifle in your basement. In the last 10 years, there has been a really big push by the manufacturers to outdo each other, as well as convince us consumers that this year's bow is worlds better than last year's bow. All that contributes to there being a bigger difference between a 15 year old bow and a new one, than between a 15 yr. old gun and a new one. Yeah, they are too expensive to easily justify, and don't hold their value very well. Bows are still much cheaper toys to play with than Bass Boats.;)[8D] |
RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
atlasman, I agree, but as long as we, and that's me included, will pay the high markup for a new bow the prices will keep increasing. If the demand for a particular bow design drops or the popularity of the line decreases, so do prices. This happened with tree stands. The originals like the Baker were the in thing. More and more companys stated to produce more reliable, safer and comfortable stands. The prices soared for many years until there became a saturation of manufacturers. With the added competition in the tree stand market many manufacturers started lowering prices to stay competative and keep their slice of the market share. There are very few stable bow manufacturers that have been in business for over 10 years. They come and go. The big guys have the market pretty much under control.;)

Holy shnikeys atlas! I never expected this to turn into a five page thread!
![]() Bow prices do suck!! How anyone can argue that point that isn't making their living off of bow prices is beyond me. Me thinks some people just like to argue! ![]() |

RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
I agree atlas man, but I have sold a couple of bows on ebay and I have gotten similar price for bare bow as many are getting with all the accessories. I would look into selling bow only and either keep accessories for next bow (as I did) or sell accessories parted out. Just a thought.
Good Luck and just think of the fun it is to get and set up a new rig. |
RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
atlasman - we agree to disagree on that then
I recently bought a Hoyt/Relflex bow, cam and 1/2, split limbs, droptine whiskerbiscuit, adjustable sight (like I like) shipped to me for $250 So while new bow prices might suck, used ones tend to be really good. With EBAY theres few things now that I would buy new |
RE: Bow Prices SUCK!!!!!!!
Just keep it as a backup, you need two bows anyway and money is not a problem so just keep it and use it when that new bow breaks ;).
