Shot Placement?
 

I'm going to be bowhunting for the first time next year. I am concerned about arrow placement. If I understand correctly I am trying to place an arrow that hits both lungs, has a chance to hit the heart and avoids as much heavy bone(shoulder) as possible. Is this accurate? I found several pictures that show deer from several different angles. I dotted them where I think I am aiming. Please let me know if these shots look good, okay, bad, or "put down the bow and slowly walk back to the truck". Thank you!

These images are all just for the body poition of the animal, I understand that in some of these images the deer isn't necessarily a shooter, or is aware of the hunter.

1. Broadside (from ground)

2.Slightly quartering away (from the ground)

3. Quartering away(from ground)

4. Slightly quartering towards(from ground)

5.Slightly quartering towards(from above angle)


I'm very visual so if anyone has any other angles and could illustrate good shots I would really appreciate them. Thanks again.

You've got some good placement there. The questionable one is the quartering to. #4 With a bow it is generally not looked at as a high % shot. That shoulder can block the vitals. Also looking back I'd drop #5 down and right just a tad.

#1 GOOD

#2 GOOD

#3 GOOD Maybe slightly more foward.

#4 I'd waid till he got more broadside and aim lower.

#5 This one you will only get the top of the far lung and likley hit the bottom side of the spine. Especially if he ducks just a little bit. Aim a bit lower. Right where at the top of the shadow line.


Glad to see as the pics progressed you moved up from fawns to larger deer.;):D

3 and 4 are not good angles to shoot at with archery. 1, 2,3 are just slightly, slightly high, but I'm sure where you have the placement, they would both be dead.

Yea, I'm sure some "expert" archers would say 4 and 5 are good shots because they are so great. But I still wouldn't shoot.

Personaly i like a good quartering away shot so i would shoot #3 and would also shoot #1 and #2 But i would hold out on# 4 For him to walk a little futher in order to get a better broadside shot. As for #5 i would most likely wait for a min or so. He would most likely move one way or another and would end up giving a better shot.[&:]

I think you are a bit high on all except #2, you want a low exit hole to loose blood, with high holes you might not get good blood untilt he cavity fills up to the height of the holes.

However, all are killign shots.
