I rate myself above ave.... but still a student!!!

RE: How do you rate yourself?
As far as knowing deer and deer hunting, I think I'm above average and don't think anyone could ever consider themselves an "expert" in that area. As far as archery skills, I'm average and hate to tinker with stuff and don't at all get into the technicality of things but can kill a deer at 20 yards any day of the week.

RE: How do you rate yourself?
I never have rated myself, cause it will always be wrong!
I tuned my bow myself, I can hit a quarter at 20 yards consistantly,I knew where the deer eat drink, sleep, and go poop in the woods,on the property I hunted for the last 3 years. If I didn't shoot it I it's 'cause I didn't want to, If I did shoot it I took it home. Now I'm in the same boat as Chiefheadhunter, fighting slobs on public land. Not all the people on public land are slobs, but when you find one it ruins my day. If I did rate myself I was an expert/pro when I was on private land. now that I'm on public I'm a "target archer"... Never hunted but hit the bullseye quite often! The WMA i'm planning on hunting will not allow scouting till one week before the season starts. Then it will change. FOOLPROOF? Never underestimate the power of a fool! |
RE: How do you rate yourself?
Better than average hunter and I still spend the majority of my time trying to be a better hunter through scouting, reading, etc. Novice shooter. Always placed more emphasis on the hunting aspect than the shooting. Felt like if I could shoot out to 20yds, that is all I needed if my hunting skills were any good.
Changed that this year with the retiring of my old Oneida Eagle and purchase of a Legacy. Now with the help of folks on this forum, I'm focusing more on my shooting and equipment and have become a better shot. Plus after getting my best buck with a bow yet this past year, I'm really pumped for the coming season. |

RE: How do you rate yourself?
I would have to say somewhere between hunter and above average. I have been bowhunting for 16 years. I am still learning more about my equipment and the game I hunt every year. The learning and experience never ends. I practice every day and scout every day throught out the year. I have alot of skill and confidence in myself upon entering the woods. Iam also all ears to any bowhunter about advice to hunting. I try to learn more and more, but will never learn enough, and thats what makes bowhunting--BOWHUNTING!

RE: How do you rate yourself?
I think I can take a sampling out of a couple of catagories to descibe myself. The Above Average cat. describes how I care for my equipment. The Expert catagory describes how well I know our land. (It's easy to fall into that cat. when you have private land.) Finally, the Hunter cat. describes my shooting and hunting abilities.

RE: How do you rate yourself?
When it comes to the bow I would rate myself a Novice, in regards to hunting overall I would rate myself a Woodsman, with 35+ years of deer hunting under my belt, I consistantly scout well, my positioning of stands still needs some work for bow. This will be my third bow season and I feel this year will be the year for my first bow kill(probably more). This year unlike last year I have had much more time to scout and already have several stands in place that I know will put me well within 20 yards of at least 3 deer every afternoon during the opening week, and another that will be good throughout the day.

RE: How do you rate yourself?
I would rank myself as an above-average/hunter. I put quite abit of time into my prep work and I am good to go when the season roles around.
|
RE: How do you rate yourself?
sheesh, i guess i would call myself a hunter. I plan and work toward a better "rating" each year, but havent been in the sport seriusly that long. Excellent Question. By the way, im new here and i apprieciate everyones 2 cents to help me be a better, smarter archer. HUNT SAFE

RE: How do you rate yourself?
I think i'm an above average archer imo.
|
RE: How do you rate yourself?
I would rate myself above average hunter I have been bow hunting for 10 years now and deer hunting most of my life I will turn 45 oct 1st but I don't care how long you have been hunting or how good a shot you are you will never stop learning new things about this great sport.

RE: How do you rate yourself?
Novice -
Over 200 hours in the field and still have yet to fill a tag. Have learned a ton though. This is the year. "It's not the kill, it's the adventure and challenge! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>" |
RE: How do you rate yourself?
Would have to say woodsman/hunter/novice(always room to improve on bow skills and woodsmanship).I may not hit the 10 or 12 ring on a 3d animal but can put it in the kill zone more often than not.I know what range I am most effective at acheiving that task(25 yds and in)and wont take a low percentage shot.Since I Stalk or still hunt 90% of the time any deer that I can sneak into range on is a trophy.Ecspecially since i hunt pressured deer on public land.I may not get a deer everyyear usen this style of hunten but the knowledge and skills improve every year.when i get to where I think I know it all and can learn no more it's time to quit cause mamma nature made her babies wily and one should never feel that all is learned.
If god didn't want us to eat animals....Why did he make them outa meat? |

RE: How do you rate yourself?
i'm a novice, and trying to improve each and every day.i practice every day and i'm and above average hunter. i'v been hunting for 31 years starting with my dad at 5 years old, but i'm fairly new at bow hunting[2 years].i'v never taken one with a bow, but i pass up yearlings and small bucks. i learn someting new every time i hunt or practice. and one day i will [god willing]be an expert.

RE: How do you rate yourself?
Interesting thread:)!!! I shoot OK, well enough to win a few NFAA state championships, but will never be a pro-class shooter. My bow knowledge and tuning abilities are fairly good for not being a bow shop owner or mechanic. As far as hunting I'm successful most years and usually limit myself to one or two deer depending on how much freezer space there is. Overall I just like to shoot archery and hunt, so who knows where that would place me. My main goals are to be an ethical hunter and have a good time doing it.

RE: How do you rate yourself?
Expert by your definition,not mine.

RE: How do you rate yourself?
Hunter I do target shoot all year, but I' am not a super shot, and I know the area's like the back of my hand. I just don't have any luck.
