How long for a liver hit?

Ok, I hit a doe about 3:30 - 3:45 this afternoon. I would swear I hit tight behind her shoulder but must be wrong. She bolted 40 yards or so & started calming down & then something spooked her & she ran off. I waited 1/2 hour or so & left my blind to look at the arrow & check for a blood trail. Found the arrow covered in real red blood & all the fur at the shot was brown so I figure liver? Anyhoo just before dark I followed her a bit to see if I could figure where she went. I spooked her out of her bed from about 50 yards away & she bedded down maybe 150 yards from the shot.
Do you guys think she'll be dead by 10:30 or so? I dont want to wait till tommorow cuz the coyotes will get her for sure & even if they dont she'll be froze solid unless she lives thru the night. Its pretty cold here tonite low teens to high single digits.
Damn I hate when this happens.[:@] I was so sure I got a good hit I wasn't convinced the deer I saw run away was mine till I followed the blood.[:'(]

Well she should be there unless there are dogs or coyotes out there then she might get up an make a run for it. But im sure u will find her. Since its cold her scent will stay down as if it was a bit warmer but not in CT its frezzing out there. Good luck man.

Go get her. I bet she is dead already. Good job on backing off. If you seen her lay down again I bet she will be right there.

Found her! :) Just over the hill I spooked her over. Dont believe she went 100 yards after I jumped her. 1, 2, 3 beds 5 feet apart & there she was. Man I'm happy, never found one after I jumped it before. :D
Nice medium sized doe, I figure 110 or so on the hoof.
Thanks for the support guys.

Goin ta bed now, nite all.

Happy ending and a lesson learned. When in doubt of a shot, wait longer than you normally would and you'd probably found her in the first bed....like I wrote in the Recovery thread pinned at the top of the page....when mortally wounded, a deer will usually bed withing 250 yards of the shot and in your case, much closer.....congrats on a great recovery.

Nice job----congrats on the recovery. It's always scary when you jump em, you never know how far they will go.

Good job in waiting. You can't go wrong that way.

Congrats again.

I would say that if you let her lay until 10:30 or so after the wife gets home you'll prolly find her close to where you jumped her;)....Oh I see you've already thought of that:D

CONGRATS!!!!!!

Yes & no. ;) At the shot I'da swore it was a perfect hit. She was only 15 yards out from my ground blind & her head behind a tree without a clue. I watched the fletching dissapear into her & it looked tight behind the shoulder.

After I saw her first walk & then run away after the shot I knew something wasnt right.
I thought my deer had dropped out of sight & this one had been following it or something.

When I went looking for blood however it became obvious that the deer I saw runing like she was unhurt was mine. I went back & looked at the arrow & it was covered with red blood but no gut gunk so I thought liver & was right this time.

Hey Leverdude----when you found her where was the entrance and exit wound?

It cut the second to last rib going in & came out just behind the ribs on the other side.
I forgot to mention before that I shot thru the dern window again. Got 3 windows wth holes now. I practiced at home with them open 4" without issue but every time I shoot a deer I hit the window. [:'(] I had it open a good 8" this time too.

RE: How long for a liver hit?

Glad you found her. I had a similar situation happen near dark earlier this season and decided to wait till morning and found the deer right away. Of course I had to fork over some big $$$ to get work coverage from a partner who was on vacation while I found the deer, but still well worth it.
