Large trophy animals
I got to ask a question, How come trophy animals may such a stir that other hunter always seem to try and discredit the hunter??? Rompala buck, Betty buck, And. Many other hunters I know have taken large trophy animals and something or some one has to deface it. Why??

RE: Large trophy animals
man that is a good question, i'm always happy when someone kills a "good one" but someone always has to interject that the animal was killed "blah blah blah blah blah" all i can guess is jealousy, i have not and cannot imagine killin any deer illegally, whats the point. i don't tell anything about anything unless i see it first hand, like my grandfather taught me don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see, he also said keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and you'll go far..;), and i always thought he was crazy. makes me wish i'd paid better attention to everything he said

RE: Large trophy animals
Well there have been many attempts for someone to pull a fast one...World Class Bucks are a million dollar bill. So a lot of attempts have been made to get rich quick by illeagle means. Such as stealing, breeding, poaching etc. Remember that monster out of Michigan a few years ago, or the controversy around the Zaft buck. Heck I still don't know what the final story was on that one.
I'm glad the stories are checked out and scrutinized, when they are world class. Now if your just beating up someone who shot a 160 class buck or something along those lines, i agree jealousy plays a huge role. |
RE: Large trophy animals
How could you forget to list the Zaft buck in there:D
Human nature?? One wants what one don't have. Who knows??? |
RE: Large trophy animals
Rompola, Because there were too many questions not answered.
Beatty, Didn't hear much controversy concerning this deer. Zaft, Because who knows if it was his arrow or the Coyotes that killed it. Look at all the world class deer you see on sites like these without any controversy. |
RE: Large trophy animals
I think some controversy can be good, to a certain extent anyways. The last thing I'd want is some poacher to be holding the world record. But I agree, Envy is the reason most people seem to "want it to be fake". Jealous because they didn't shoot it themselves.

RE: Large trophy animals
Forgive my ignorance, but what ARE the controversies with some of these big bucks?
I know the Rompola story somewhat: he refused to get it x-ray'd to verify that it was an actual rack and he claims to have taken multiple record-book deer from an area that doesn't produce that many. (Plus the odds of one person taking that many are astronomical) Anything else? The Zaft buck was originally scored as a typical, but then the right G3 was ruled non-typical so it dropped almost 30 points. Anything else there? I hadn't heard any problems/concerns about how it was taken. I had hear that the huge non-typical buck shot in Albia (I think) Iowa by the youth during muzzleloader season was alleged by some to have been taken before legal hours. Any others? |
RE: Large trophy animals
CJ, Zaft never found the buck,a farmer did and called him it had been hammered by Coyotes.
There were actually two very differnt stories published about the hunt, shot and recovery of this buck, but that's for another thread. |
RE: Large trophy animals
Jealousy! I think we all feel that "wish I had shot that one" when we read a story about the Big One or see a picture with someone else next to the monster buck. Most of us are reasonable enough to not try to discredit the lucky hunter though.

RE: Large trophy animals
Sometimes there are legitimate questions that arise about how a trophy is taken. It can be a finacial windfall. Look at what Noel Feather did and many others like him have done. I guess all those shots heard at night are at Coyotes and Racoons.
I had a buddy that would work in Alberta every fall. I'll tell you there are deer on other peoples wall that this guy shot and this wasn't to gain the client money either, just bragging rights. |
RE: Large trophy animals
It does indeed seem a shame that a guy who hits the "whitetail lottery" would have to prove himself and his deer! What happened to the "innocent until proven guilty"? I do believe that simple jealosy fuels most of this. Some guys just can't stand to see someone succeed on a great whitetail. [&:]:( A great example of this is the local 293 3/8" B&C Muzzleloader monster that was taken this year. Scott Dexter is a good guy and a great hunter but some of the scum bags that work at the FARM KING store where he checked-in the deer were starting all kinds of rumor and spreading a bunch of crap! There is simply NO reason for that kind of bahavior! [:@]

RE: Large trophy animals
A lot of hunters are too "ate up" with big racks. Some of the poachers in our area were found to have their own big buck contest going with a very large cash prize. I've seen many a large buck brought into the checking station early the first morning with their eyes glazed over and half dry and sucked in. That doesn't happen in 2 hours. That kind of stuff is why a lot of people are skeptical. I've been on the receiving end of the jealousy though. I've taken quite a few large animals, all legal, and I hear comments here or there. I took a 150 class 8 point on the last evening in 2000. Left it in the truck overnight and we had a heavy frost. The eyes were still glassy the next morning due to the frost on them melting. When I took it in to the checking station the next morning a "pro shop expert" asked me if I took it that morning. First off a 150 class 8 in my area is huge. Second he had to say "I've seen better." Every one knows a "pro shop expert" , the guy who knows everything but has never taken a large buck. If I was hung up on horns I could shoot them every night at my house. I have a Biologic patch 50 yards from the house and there are always large bucks on it. I could simply turn on the light and shoot as they never run. I could not bring myself to do this no matter how large the buck is. Just my .02 cents.
