Spine size
Hi all,
I have been looking for the perfect carbon arrow. I want my total arrow weight to end up at 350gr. I am shooting a Black Knight 2, @ 70 pounds. The arrows need to be 28.5". I plan on shooting a 85gr tip. I was planning on going with the Gold Tip ultralites, with the 400 spine (55-75 lbs draw weight). I asked this same question on AT and didn't get any real answer. I had a couple of people say the bow had too hard a cam for that spine, and my accuracy would suffer. My question to you is: Is there any arrow out there that I can use to get accuracy, AND the blistering speed of 350gr? Safety is another issue. I wouldn't want to run a arrow through my hand, or have the bow explode on me. Any BK2 shooters out there shooting 5gr per pound of draw? |
RE: Spine size
Why do you want a 350 grain arrow?
Is this a hunting or target bow? I am assuming hunting since the BK2 is a fairly harsh drawing bow that would not be conducive to long sessions on the target line. If you will be useing it for hunting it will be extremely loud, the string, cams, axels, and limbs will take a lot of extra abuse for no real gain in anything. There isn't a bow made that can propel an arrow faster than sound. Quiet is far better than fast. Fast only causes you to miss faster.;) Penetration on animals will suffer with the lighter arrows. If you really want an arrow this light then go for it but you will not gain anything from it except noise and vibration. A CX300 at 28.5" with three 4" feathers and an 85 grain tip will give you a finished arrow weight between 350 - 360 grains. |
RE: Spine size
Hey Bigbulls,
Thanks for the quick reply. Actually, to be honest, I have become obsessed with speed, as it relates to the arrow falling. I wanted to try the minimum weight on my BK to see how close I could come to the 350 fps claimed IBO. I want to see how far I can use 1 pin. I can use one pin now, out to 30 yds, with a 480gr total weight. If I can get a light arrow to fly straight, I think my setup would be deadly on the 3d courses where the yardage is always different. I would like to be dead on from 5-50 yards, but think I can get it 5-40 realistically with one single pin (the days of 5 pin sights are over for me). I would also hunt with it, penetration is not really an issue. At 340 fps there should be twice the sufficient energy for a passthrough (90lbs ke). I don't shoot past 30 yds when hunting, and at that speed there isn't much time to jump the string. Every single deer I have shot has heard my bow and started to jump the string. That is why I will not take a shot past 30yds, I learned the hard way: running out of blood. I am not trying to do the speed vs. quiet thing. I have tried quiet and it works for some people, but not for me. I want speed. So, is that CX arrow pretty stiff? |
RE: Spine size
Yeah, it should work fairly well for you. I used them on a 70 pound bow with an IBO of 315 fps. The shaft was 30 inches, 125 grain head, and three 4" feathers. They flew great for me but I went in the opposite direction you are going and bought Terminator selects to end up with a 491 grain arrow.
With your shorter shaft length and only an 85 grain head it should be a good match up for you. Just remember that the lighter the arrow the more stress is put on the string and you should check it on a regular basis. |
RE: Spine size
Yep, that's what I wanted to hear. If it works good with 125 head and 30" length with a pretty darn fast bow, it will work for me with a light head and shorter draw. I was kind of worried about the arrow failing, but that 125 would put a lot of stress on them, so I'll be ok.
BTW, where is the cheapest prices online? The ones I saw were over $100 a dozen shipped on hunters friend. Thanks alot, I had overlooked the CX line. The arrow you mention is good for a 80 pound bow, so i'm in the clear (unless the bow decides to explode). |
