RE: legalizing crossbows
Whatever floats your boat. I hunt Iowa where everyone seems to want to hunt. Most deer are shot during the silly season (firearms). Which means shotgun, muzzleloader. Would I like the state to allow crossbows during archery season? Sure, if it brought more people into hunting. That's the only way hunting will continue into the future.
Besides, most of the anti crossbow'rs haven't even tried it. I have to agree with Arthur P, it's not much differant than with a compound, sights, release, high let off, ect. I've been around this sport a long time. Reminds me of the arguments between the "new" compound bows and recurve shooters.[:'(] |

ORIGINAL: gromage1 To me the fact that the hunter has to draw the bow and shoot makes the difference in hunting with a crossbow during archey season the issue. |
RE: legalizing crossbows
Art as I see it your problem isn't crossbows it's the "piddly month long season in Texas".You live there get active, change it. Come to Ohio it's from Oct. to Jan. non stop. Do you think Texas gives you a piddly season to keep the game farms in big bucks? Is the $4000 two day "hunt" with wine women and song the reason for such a short season. I know some archers take pride in practice and bow skills, that's great. The deer asked me to speak for them, they don't want anything legal. And soon they will be in the majority. If you e-mailed me that's why I'm submitting this,if not disregard.

RE: legalizing crossbows
Maybe this all boils down as to whether a crossbow is more like a bow and arrow or a gun. I personally feel it is more like a gun, hence let them (anyone, not just somebody with a disability) shoot them during the gun/primitive season. To me the fact that the hunter has to draw the bow and shoot makes the difference in hunting with a crossbow during archey season the issue. rcd567 - you get it We also do not allow any sort of draw lok or anything else capable of holding the bow at full draw. |

RE: legalizing crossbows
I'm not sure what there is to clarify, what do you consider the definition of drawing your bow is? I do believe even with 99% letoff you still at some point have to pull some weight. draw loc's are illegal here and if you can hold your bow at full draw for 5min that's great you still have to draw it back at some point. I'm not against crossbows, as stated by others, if it gets more people into hunting thats great. My stance on them is just that they don't belong in the archery season, it's just my opinion, to each his own.

RE: legalizing crossbows
What kind of form is used when shooting a crossbow? Low grip or High grip, Where do ya anchor? I dunno, gromage1 - To each is own .... good, we'll lobby to legalize them in New York, there'll be maybe 20,000 to 30,000 more people hunting during archery season and we're all cool then, right ? |
RE: legalizing crossbows
Sav,
If you read my last post, no we're not cool with that, as I said I don't think they belong in the archery season( with the exception of the disabled)forgot to mention that before. There is already a huge push to get them legalized here and as a Life Member of NYBowhunters I'll fight them as long as they try to put them in the regular archery season. I'm all for letting them have a seperate season, but they are not bows! Sure there are different kinds of bows and someday I hope I'm confident enough in my ability with a stick bow to hunt with one but right now I'm not, and ethically I don't belong in the woods with one. A BOW is a BOW not crossbow. Don't take it personal, it's just my opinion and I certainly respect yours. |
RE: legalizing crossbows
We often talk about stick and string the way the Indians did it as being the roots of archery. But, the crossbow has been around (since 400 BC) long before there were any white people on this continent to know if there were any Indians here or not. So, if it's a matter of it being a primitive weapon that should nix that because they have been around for close to 2500 years. So basically you guys don't think one of the earliest forms or archery, should be allowed in archery season:eek::([:'(][8D] Basically, what we have is people saying that other people shouldn't be allowed to hunt with anything other than what they hunt with.:(

RE: legalizing crossbows
If they were allowed in the MS bow season, I wouldn't expect many people would use them. Most people that bow hunt would never shoot one and most gun hunters don't care about being in the woods during October when it's 85 degrees EVERY day.
