What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
What is your highlight, turning point or proudest moment thus far in your bow hunting addiction?
It doesn't have to be an animal harvest but what you consider your best moment in bowhunting? |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
I have had a slow season so far but my best moment so far is when I had two does bed under an evergreen 15 yds. away on a real windy day. It was time to go (11 a.m.) but I could not get them to move. I threw stuff made lots of noise but with the wind in my face and strong they laid there. Finally aroung 12:00 they got up and moved up the hill. As me and my friend got down, he decided to go on a stalk through a creek bed to where they again bedded down 40 yds. away. He got within 20 yds. and took a nice doe. It was a fun experience.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Most of the buck i had killed with a bow where during the rut and i never knew they were on the property. This is the first year, that i actually took a buck i had spotted several times before the season.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Mine would be, the knowledge i have gain over the years and it seem each year i understand how they think and see things that i never could see, like buck corridor, or funnels, or bedding area's. I have played a game of chess with these bucks this year and i won of course. I have grown so much in this sport.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
gotta be getting my first deer with a bow. nothing better yet than that. i've also been able to closely observe whitetails and i have used this not only to bowhunt, but during rifle season as well. i think after 1 1/2 years of bowhunting, im a million times better hunter than i used to be.its given me patience as well as the art of acting in stealth. absolutely no funner thing to do in the world.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
This was the first time that I actually PASSED on a deer, a button buck! Instead I shot him with my video camera. I watched him graze towards me for about 15 minutes and when I noticed he had "buttons" I decided not to shoot with my bow! I felt pretty good about this. This was a brand new spot and first time I hunted it. That was the last evening of the early bow season(thursday). Then on Sunday morning with my shotgun I harvested a mature doe from the same tree. I was pretty stoked. Can you say GOOD KARMA! Also harvested a doe on sunday night! Good luck!

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
My turning point was the beginning of the 2001 hunting season. After 15 years of deer hunting and many oppurtunities to shoot a wallhanger I had nothing to show for it. I had managed to shoot something every year and I was proud of each one, but I wanted something to hang on the wall. Every time I had a chance at a big one something went wrong. So I prayed to God at the beginning of the 2001 season and asked him to give me some sort of sign to let me know if I should keep hunting after that season was over. In November of that year I shot a nice 8-point and forgot all about my prayer until I got the deer home and realized it had a white spot in the shape of a C on the front of its neck under the normal white spot. That just happens to be the initial of my first name. So I continued to hunt. 2002 produced an 11 point, and 2003 a 9 point. They all hang on my living room wall and remind me every day the power of prayer and faith. I can achieve nothing on my own, but anything is possible with help from above.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
This is an easy one for me. The highlight of my bow hunting career happened this year when I watched over my 11 yr. old son's shoulder as he shot a 140+ class buck for his first deer. Yes he used a crossbow and not a regular bow but I can justify that since he is too small to shoot his Browning Micro Midas at the state minimum of 40 lbs. (and much preferred to taking him gun hunting). I have killed 3 Pope & Young bucks myself and those memories do not compare experiencing this hunt with my son. Some people even asked if I was dissapointed because If I had been sitting in my stand without my son I would have shot him myself. Either those people are fools, don't have kids, or maybe my mindset is just different because I was way happier and excited having him shoot it than myself. To have a father and son sit in the same tree at the right time and remain quiet, still, and scent free enough for a mature buck to come within 16 yards may have been a once in a lifetime experience.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
well i had an 8 pointer come in just past too dark to shoot which was the only deer i had in range that was in one of my shooting lanes all season.
still have till january 14th to get one |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
First year achery hunter. Went out 7 times so far and got with in 5-10 yards of deer (several bucks and does) four times. Every time on the ground too. Pretty lucky odds. Never been that close to deer until this year it became an instant addiction. Had a shot on a nice 5by5 but arrow did not penetrate shoulder. Found out that was the worst feeling a bowhunter could have.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Well it happened today 11-29-04
I saw my first white deer in the field. That was cool! |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
id say the highlight is pattering a buck and figuring out his travel pattern on a totally new piece to me this yr and then getting a shot on him. And I guess I can say the next highlight is Knowing hes still alive. [:'(]

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
watching my daughter on stand last year she had a nice 6 point come out and he was 35 yrds i watched her draw on him but she realized he was just out of her range so she backed down and just watched him for 5 minutes while he ate acorns and just kept walking away from her stand,
at one point i could have taken him but decided if he was to be taken it was her shot witch she never got a chance at:) |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
If you would have asked me two weeks ago I probably would have given a different answer because I was extremely upset at that time. I had the privelege of watching a main frame 10pt with two drop tines (one on each side) and incredible mass within 15 yards of my stand. I never picked up my bow because I'm hunting in a EAB unit and at that time I hadn't filled my doe tag yet. I watched him for nearly 15 minutes before he finally walked away. When I told my buddies and my co-workers about it , the majority of them said they would have shot him anyway. So now that I look back at it I can honestly say I feel proud that I wasn't sucked into being a poacher because of antler size. I guess that would be my latest highlight.
And lowlight!:D |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
My one-week bowhunting trip to West Va with my best bud.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Wow BOWFANATIC, what an incredible experience that had to have been. I commend you on doing the right thing. I have had some of my most satisfying hunting moments from passing shots on deer that I know 95% of the hunters out there would have took. I get more satisfaction from that feeling than actually shooting a small buck. Being selective and waiting for a nice rack is not "all about the kill" as some people suggest.
My hunting buddy had a similiar situation happen to him two years ago. He had taken his buck and was hunting to fill his doe tag. I went home early that year and left my stand up so he could sit in it. The next day he had a 140 class buck come to his grunt call, one of the only bucks to ever respond to his calling. He could do nothing but watch him at 15 yards but the experience is one he will never forget. |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
I'd have to say without a doubt it's the people I've meet along the way. I've meet a lot of hunters but it seems I "click" with bow hunters better. We look and the woods and our quarry in a diffrent light. IMo we understand each other better.
As a rule I like all hunters but I like to comradardy and the willingness to help each other out that I find in bowhunters. It makes it all worth while. |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Killing this guy on the morning a very good friend of mine was headed back home to PA for his Chemo treatment. It was a very special moment to call him and tell him I had done it for him like I had promised him I would before he left to go home. The time we shared around that deer will make it always one of my favorites!!

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
My highlight has been all of my hunting trips. They are all awesome! If I had to pick one I would pick the one I just went on this weekend. I was able to track a deer while searching for a blood trail.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
It had to be watching 3 does head right for my tree, then without warning plop down and bed at 45 yds. Watching them for 2 hours seemed like an eternity. Then they finally got up, changed directions and I nailed one at 38 yds. Two days later, same tree, same 2 does come by and I get one at 20 yds. Two days later same trail the remaining doe walks by and I let her keep going cause I would need her a few weeks later for permit Bow (earn a buck zone). Never did see her again.:)

A once in a lifetime Minnesota Moose! Or my first Pope & Young in 17 years of hunting! I'm leaning too the Pope & Young. Ive been working on that for years! It's been a great year for me. It will be tough to top it!! |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
ORIGINAL: cardeer Letting small deer walk My favorite thing is always spending my hunting time with my best friend. Fortunately his wife understands and lets him have extra time in the woods when I'm in town.:) |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
It's taken me a few days to think about this.
Proudest moment was my 1st Turning point was when i let the 1st buck walk in order to shot a bigger one |

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Shooting at my first deer when I was thirteen, even though it was a miss. Boy was I excited, and here 7 years later, I still get that way. Also this year when I heard the story of my 11 year-old cousin shooting his first deer, a spike, with his bow.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
I was 14 years old when I got my first bow kill. I had been watching Dick Idol on some hunting videos, and he used an arrow against his quiver to imitate rattling. I figured if he could do it, I could. I banged and rubbed my arrow on the side of the quiver and literally 30 seconds later a 5 point ran in on a string and stopped directly under my stand. After the shot he only went 40 yards. It is still my most memorable hunt.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
This year itself has been my best moment. I have seen more bucks with potential to be nice in the next couple of years (pending they make it) that I let walk and just admired them. I saw a couple of them on more than one occation and just felt good about letting them walk on. The possibility of them making it is slim but there is still the chance and some day maybe my patients will pay off and I will be rewarded. Until then I will keep taking trophy class does and keep the freezer full.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
In 48 years of Bowhunting I have had many BUT my favorite experiences are when my son & brother have been with me & they bag an animal or have the shooting (maybe even miss). My son taking his Caribou at age 16 & my brother taking a good non-typical Whitetail. Just being together & sharing a good time. I have a daughter(she is a Nurse) that will be Bowhunting in the VERY near future. I took my son-in-law on a hog hunt this past week & he got his 1st kill & it's his 1st year Bowhunting. Seeing the look on his face was a thrill in itself. I can go on & on. I have tons of SPECEIAL times. Family & Friends make the hunts. Good luck to all.

RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Two things stand out for me. First when my son (age 16) got me out of the woods when I broke my leg. He handled himself like the fine adult he is. He knew what to do and did it.
Second happened 3 weeks later when he shot his first buck with a bow. He is hoyt14 and the picture is in the bowhunting contest. I think it is on page 4. Anyway bad season for me but I sure did learn what kind of fine young man I have raised. I couldn't be more proud of him. |
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
Looking an 8 pointer dead in the eyes at 35 yds for a whole 10 seconds, heart-pounding, bow drawn, waiting for him to decipher whether I was a part of the tree or not.
|
RE: What has been the highlight to your bowhunting thus far?
For me it would definitely be seeing my fathers face after his first bowkill in over 15 years of trying. That will go down in the books and will never be outdone no matter how big my next kill might be.
