grunt calls

i bought a grunt call, and now that i have it, what do i do? lol. How frequently do you use it? how many times at a time. What kind of areas do you look to use it? The rut started around the 20th here.

thanks for the help!

RE: grunt calls

I have been using grunt calls for tha last couple years and really like them. The first series of grunts I will do is when I get into my stand.Any noise I make, whether its rustling leaves, snapping sticks or whatever I believe the grunt will settle down the deer thinking its another one in the area.
Alot of my grunt calling is blind.Meaning I dont see a deer in the immediate area but trying to get ones attention. At this time I will call maybe 5-7 times and put it away for about .5 hour to .45 hour at a time.I will try calling again and do the same.
If I see a deer then I dont want to over do it as he might pinpoint me to my specific location. When he is a distance away and not looking my way I will let out maybe 2 loud grunts to get his attention to come my way,if he turns his direction towards me then I will stop and get ready.I personally think grunt calls are a hit or miss situation, sometimes they are interested and sometimes coulden't care less.
To answer your question on the areas to use it,really dosn't matter. If you think the area holds a buck, then give it a go,besides what have you got to loose.

I've used a grunt call to "close the distance" on several bucks through the years. However, I spooked a nice 8 pointer this bow season using a grunt call. I agree sometimes a buck doesn't even appear to have heard the grunt call at very close distance. But overall I always carry one and use it often.

I like the new true talker. Gives you the ability to make any sound a deer makes. I only use it, however, when I see or hear a deer. I think it caters to the deers curiosity without alarming him. You have to be careful too not to make the grunt of the biggest baddest buck in the woods while trying to call in a smaller buck, it could and probably will scare him off.

I used to grut blindly... then i read an article that was very agaist it. This year i have restrained myself and have ssen the results. I only us it to bring in deer or to cover my own noise. it seems to work for me...
