Hunters say NO to QDM for the U.P. of Michigan
Here in the U.P. of Michigan, the DNR wanted to make the U.P. into a QDM Zone for 5 years. Allowing Only Bucks to be shot with 4 points or more on one Side.. There has been over 2000 signatures against this, I FOR ONE AM NOT ONE OF THEM.. I would love to see this happen.. But all the guys that say NO, want to be able to shoot spikes and forks whenever they want...I dont think these people understand that in order to have BIGGER bucks , which everyone complains there isn't enough of, you need to let the little ones walk and have the area managed.. But I also think that the DNR doesnt really have an Idea on the Population of DEER in the U.P. the WHOLE U.P. Complained about the POOR deer season this year.. In some places , hunters were seeing more wolves than Deer, I personally know TWO guys that had wolves come within 30 yrds of them..
I dont know what is gonna happen up here, but its not getting better |

Man that stinks. Down here, we can only shoot a deer with 4 points or more and a 12" spread.

Mathews Boy,
Here in Dickinson County we have a QDM zone in zone 122 and it is working well. I have seen bigger bucks now and have actually passed up a few ok shooters. I have never seen a big ten on our property but this year there have been two of them with 17 to 18 in spreads. If you ask me QDM is working here, they just need to get a handle on the doe population too. I thought they were going to go with 3 pts on one side like they are doing here in 122? Anyway, 3pts, 4pts works either way for me. I am for it!!! |
RE: Hunters say NO to QDM for the U.P. of Michigan
I was told they aren't gonna do it, because to many people DONT WANT IT..
Who knows.. and by the way, How do you measure a 12" spread at 30 yrds? what happens if it happens to be 11 3/4 |
RE: Hunters say NO to QDM for the U.P. of Michigan
I can't believe they voted it out. I am sure that most of the people that voted against it spend the majority of their time drinking Old Milwaukee long necks at camp than they do hunting so hopefully it won't make to much of a difference. Today I am embarassed to be from the U.P.

RE: Hunters say NO to QDM for the U.P. of Michigan
This whole issue this burns me up... IMO i think the DNR wants to do away with our deer heard. We are we always way behind the rest of the world up here. Im from northern houghton county and its sickning the the amount of wolves that are up here now. The deer numbers are way down up here and if something isnt done soon it will be like it was back in the early 70's "when there was no deer". I support the QDM also and have been for quite some time. I had a feeling that there were more that were against the new law then for it..I really dont know why people dont understand the good that QDM could bring to our deer heard.:(

I know what you mean, And I also agree, I think the DNR wants to desimate our HERD..
I was told part of the Reason is because the BIG Insurance Companies are on their asses to get it down, cuz they aren't making enough money.. Crazy....... |
RE: Hunters say NO to QDM for the U.P. of Michigan
guys dont feel to bad down here where i hunt (newaygo county) i hunt in the manistee forrest and the dnr hasnt put out any doe tags on public land for i believe 5 yrs, and all we are seeing is
does and small bucks, it gets very upsetting seeing this as there could be a better quality of deer in our state look at the deer coming out of jackson as an example, them guys are killing some nice bucks.. last year i called the dnr office in lansing to see if the public land i hunt could be turned into a qdm and alot of the hunters that hunt on this property where all for it but the dnr turned it down saying that it wasnt a viable idea for the area as there are to few does,, i agree our dnr sucks and al they truly care about is the salmon and trout they would much rather see our deer herd disapear,, truly we here in some counties of mich have gotten the the brunt end of this stick and nothing will change until the brown its down attitude changes and the dnr really startes to care about our deer herd,, |
RE: Hunters say NO to QDM for the U.P. of Michigan
Hey there Folks,
I originally came from the Soo. I heard that the number of deer checked through the bridge was up over 10%. If that's true some folks must be seeing deer. However, I wish they would have passed the points restriction. Gotta get the word out and keep trying to convince folks. I know it's hard. I've had plenty of conversations down here in Inidana. Good Luck All |
