Accidental drop test...
It's embarassing, but I did something this season I'd never thought I'd do. I'd been hunting pretty hard the last week and wasn't getting much sleep. I was in a familiar tree, oh, about 25 feet up. Now, I've dropped things before, the arm guard while putting it on, drop a flashlight, things like that, but I'd never, ever dropped my bow... well...
About 30 minutes into a particularly cold evening hunt, I put my hands in my coat pockets. I wear fingerless gloves and the wind chill was bad. I always hold my bow and had it across my lap. I musta dozed off just for a second or two. Have you ever startled yourself when your head nods and then you wake up? Well, I recall that, with the sound of something passing across fabric. It was my bow, figuring it was time to get down, but without the rope. It was almost slow motion... all I could do was watch it go... a back flip with a half twist. The arrow was still on the string and made a couple neat flips of its own after bashing into the earth. All I needed was a panel of judges to hold up the score cards and it would have been complete. I'd have given it an 8.5 for technique alone. I got the bow home and into the press for a once over. Fortunately, I was on the edge of a farm field and the soil was soft. The upper idler was encased in dirt and I was afraid the limb may have contacted a root. I was glad to see everything was in good shape. A bit of cleaning, a check for bent cams and out to the target for a sight in. I dialed it back in and was able to fill my last tag with it three days later. So, just out of curiosity, I'm wondering if anyone else has ever drop tested their bow? [8D][&:]:) |
RE: Accidental drop test...
Nope an hope I never do. Also hope I never test out my Hunter safety system vest. ;)

RE: Accidental drop test...
All the usal stuff and my self 1 time . I am sure others have droped their bows and not been so lucky as to not bend or break something

RE: Accidental drop test...
happened to me the first time this year as well it fell off my holder that is built onto my stand i was most displeased but the bowtech took a licking and its still ticking!!!

RE: Accidental drop test...
I dropped my bow out of my stand as well this year. Knocked my sight loose and busted my stabilizer off. I have yet to get it shoot right again.
|
RE: Accidental drop test...
Hasn't happened to me yet. I am a "don't put your self in a situation where your bow can fall" nazi though. I always hang mine from a hook or hold it in my hands. I don't believe those stand brackets give the security I need.

RE: Accidental drop test...
I drove off with it on the roof already. the road was hard and well, time for a new bow
|
RE: Accidental drop test...
It's happened to me a couple of time's ,the pu;; rope only has a cheap plastic clip and the wieght of the bow verses the clip caused the rope to let go,so now i wrap the rope around the bow 3 times and this seem's to help.Luckily there was no damage done .

RE: Accidental drop test...
I dropped mine last year, it landed soft as a feather rolling forward as it hit and just laying itself down. You were fortunate, I know a guy who fell asleep this year and didnt wake up tull he was hiing brush on his decent, he was fortunate only 8 staples and tons of stitches to fix him. He pretty muck ripped his forehead and scalp off.
Scary....be careful!!! |

RE: Accidental drop test...
Never happened to me, my dad dropped his matthews last season and cracked a limb. I told him somebody out there must be doing him a favor ;)

RE: Accidental drop test...
I have never dropped anything, but it IS only my second year! My boyfriend has dropped himself though... one of our good friends dropped his bow first time out this year. I also hold onto my bow, temps don't usually get cold enough for pockets during bow season, so I really don't have to worry about that. I bought a hook, but in the stand I was using for bow season, I didn't really have a good place to put it. I am sure I will drop something one of these days....

RE: Accidental drop test...
Never have dropped mine..yet.and i hope i don't,that would bite the big one[:@]

RE: Accidental drop test...
I droped mine a few years back. I was lucky and did no damage. The worst drop was this year when I droped my cow call and a bull was bugaling about 150 yards out!

RE: Accidental drop test...
Yes I have and when I grabbed for it I came up with a hand full of Muzzy broadhead and the bow still hit the ground....so be careful.....I was cut pretty bad..
AND just last year my friend Q2INWHITETAILS, dropped his Q2.....when he told me via radio it happened I thought, there goes that bow cause I doubt a Mathews could take that,;)[8D] but to my surprise only his peep popped out. It was time to take a break so we went to my place, I popped it back in and a couple shots later we were in the woods for the evening hunt.... Be careful out there. |
RE: Accidental drop test...
Nope, never dropped my bow. My best-friend dropped his bow a few years back. He said that he just watched it fall and he also said it seemed like it was slow-motion. He said the bow hit the ground pretty much up-right, and the limb compressed on the earth then threw the bow up another 5 feet or so. We went over the bow for awhile and found everything was okay. He went out to test shoot it and the thing was still dead on out to 40 yards! He got lucky that the bow hit in an up-right position as it just put pressure on the limb which the bow is designed to do!

RE: Accidental drop test...
Well, the first thing that i have ever droped was a bottle of tinks 69 into the creek since my stand is right above the creekline. The creek is only about 8 inches deep so i let it sit in there the whole evening since the bottle was closed tight. The worst thing that I have droped was my cell phone. It hit a climbing peg on the way down and cracked the screen in half. I called up the cellular company, and they said that i didn't have insurance on it and it would cost around 200 dolla to get a new one. Well i got home and looked at the papers and found that it was checked off to have insurance on it. So i got my new phone for 35 bucks..... I hope that if i ever drop my bow i have some kind of hidden insurance on it!!!:D

RE: Accidental drop test...
Have been close a number of times, as I am also a "holder". The worst thing I dropped was my pee bottle 1.5 hours before sunup on opening day of bow season. I drank 2- 16 oz coffees on my ride. Was able to last until 9am.

RE: Accidental drop test...
YES!!
Bowhunting from my climber, in a bind, on a skinny tree in a thicket. I was on a really good trail, and was really pressing to find a climbable tree. It was windy, 10:00 - I was standing, as a scrub buck approached from behind. Well, the wind shifted and I must have wobbled a bit, causing my stand to swing and slide about 6 inches. I just threw the bow and hugged that god-forsaken tree. You're right - it's like s l o w m o t i o n - After a 25 foot freefall onto frozen ground, my bow was unscathed. It landed right on the single-cam, and bounced sideways about 10 feet. I had to pick a lot of mud out of the cam and bushings - a garden hose proved the most effective. I am very hard on equipment, and I must give my nod to Jennings bows (Airmaster). I have broken/damaged just about every other bow I've ever owned. As always, I do not baby my equipment, and expect flawless function. I've treated this one worst of all, and it has yet to fail. I was on a run of buying a new bow every two years. After seeing this bow get dryfired and dropped without skipping a beat, I decided to spend my money on a new treestand and more deer tags. Anyone ever drop a rifle from their stand??? |
RE: Accidental drop test...
That's exactly why I have a bow holder on my climber.
Glad that your bow survived. |
RE: Accidental drop test...
Well I never dropped my bow, but like Pa/Rob I once dropped an arrow tipped with a broad-head. My cat-like reflexes responded and I caught the tip! I left a good blood trail out of the woods.

RE: Accidental drop test...
I've dropped my compound (a couple of bows ago) - didn't have a pin guard and after the fall, had no pins either.
I've also dropped my recurve, but luckly it landed in the big bush at the base of the tree and broke its fall. Came out good on that one. |
RE: Accidental drop test...
Mine fell out of a holder bounced once. Just had to clean it off from some mud. Still was dead on. I was lucky. I have dropped gloves, a boot, hats, deer calls, seat cushion, lunch..but nothin yet this season..

RE: Accidental drop test...
A close friend of mine just got out of the hospital after dropping himself out of the stand. His stand was about 25 feet up in the tree. He said it was a homemade stand but he had purchased a seat for it. As he was trying to hitch up his safety harness, the seat gave way and down he went. He managed to struggle a mile through the woods to his vehicle and his cell phone where he called his son and told him he needed his help. He thought he was dying. His son managed to phone the paramedics and lead them to his dad. End result...he had several broken ribs, a broken arm, a broken wrist, some bones broken in the neck vertebrae, he had bruised every major organ in his body (heart, lungs, kidneys, liver), and suffered massive internal bleeding. His body temp was down to 90 when they found him and his blood pressure was down to 60 something. Doctors ended up removing his spleen which had been torn into three pieces. He showed me the picture of it and it looked like it had been shot. He's lucky to be alive.
As Carpmaster said, be careful out there and remember to take that cell phone if you have one, and let someone know where you're hunting! |

RE: Accidental drop test...
Here's another legendary dumb move (by me)
On the last day of 2001 archery season, I was home from PSU for the weekend. I cleared my calendar, and decided that I would take the first buck that I saw, then go small game hunting. I pulled off the interstate and away I went. The plan worked perfectly. I took a 5 point, dragged him down to the car and hid him in the brush. I switched my bow for my shotgun and went back into the woods in search of squirrels and turkey. 5 hours later, I returned to my car, and I could see something sitting on the roof... Yeah, it was my bow. My brand new bow sat on the roof of my car unattended for 5 hours along the interstate, and nobody bothered to take it. I was so wrapped up in switching into small game gear that I inadvertently left my bow lay on the roof. Talk about feeling dumb. I know another guy who drove away and his bow suffered a death by pavement. I lost the left half of a pair of good LaCrosse boots that way. |
RE: Accidental drop test...
About the goofiest thing that I've done was 4-5 years ago I was hunting this small farm and at the end of the day my dad and I were setting in his truck waiting for my bro's to come in. It was pi$$ing the rain down when a couple of doe came out into the field that his truck was setting in so I got out and got my bow out of the back of his truck but when the deer ran off instead of putting it back I just put it under the truck incase any other deer crossed. Well after I got home I realized that I didn't have my bow with me so I drove 1 hour back to the farm in the dark and sure enough the bow was laying right where I had left it. The only problem was that when we drove off we ran over it and broke the sight, quiver, and rest but luckily the bow was OK. But I did feel stupid.[:'(]
