ORIGINAL: NY Bowhunter Well i'm glad they are not all alike, and we don't have to worry about that. I rabbit, squirrel and other small game hunt and they are all alike (basically) so i'd still hunt. But the obsession of chasing 1 buck all year or a certain quality of deer is certainly consuming. It's a different passion than just shooting what-ever-comes-by. It gets personal, so I can see his point. Dont' get me wrong, I have no problems with being out there hunting for a trophy buck (I do it myself), but that is probably secondary in respect to all the little things that go along with hunting. So in a simple statement I'll summarize. I love hunting, my choice is to pursue the better bucks in my area. In fact I could have been done months ago, if I'd have taken that 2 1/2 year old basket 8 point that was under my stand. So perhaps I enjoy my time afield even more than you huh? Now that's probably not an accurate statement, (I hope) but if I was looking at it with tunnel vision I could come to that conclusion. Too each his own. |

Here's something to ask for all those out there who "Don't Care"... If you told someone you shot a buck would you say...
1. I got a Deer...?? 2. I got a Buck...?? 3. I got a Nice 10 point...?? Then ask yourself if you did shoot a buck would someone want to know how many points it was... Sure they would and you would be proud to tell them, 8 point, 4 point, whatever the case may be.... Scoring a buck is no differnt... It's just another form of measurement on your trophy... JMO... |

ORIGINAL: Straightarrow For someone to suggest that because I want to know how it scores, makes me some kind of lesser hunter, is rediculous. So yes, there is meaning to numbers. They are factual and they do supply information. No one knows what is in a hunter's mind when he wants to know these numbes, and to judge them negatively is less than admirable in my opinion. and BTW I hope you don't expect everyone to believe the reason behind all the "What do you think he will score?" threads is building a knowledge base on the local herd :eek: |

It's more of a "being proud of your animal thing"...
I know myself, I talk to ALOT of people about hunting... And when I tell someone about a deer that I have taken, they want to know about it... How Many points, weight, score, story, ect... If you never told anyone about a deer you take then you aren't proud at all...IMO... And the score is just another aspect of that... |

I wont allow them to shoot any "trophy" bucks unless they are mature, and I have to know the score of the deer (along with other things) for my personal records Where I live the big deer your hunting has as more a chance of getting hit by a car then a hunter getting it. I decided not to participate in the "contest" because I really don't consider hunting to ba a competition. The more the empahsis is put on the size of the rack the less support we will see from non-hunters. I'm not talking anti-hunters. It seems like everything is going toward growing big deer, it's a slippery slope. |

Don't put words in my mouth that I only enjoy the hunting expirience if I shoot a "book" buck. Because that is not true at all. I enjoy watching does, smaller bucks, oppossums, tweety birds and the squirrel wrestling with that ear of corn that is as big as he is. So perhaps I enjoy my time afield even more than you huh? Now that's probably not an accurate statement, Hey whatever .... if people are wrapped up in the score then so be it. It just seems like each year it leans more and more to that being the primary reason for hunting and I'd rather not see it happen. |

Who said anything even remotely close to that?? Who is judging them negatively?? A few of them: So the obsession is a # on a scale of measuring racks or the rack itself and not the passion of the hunt? Do you appreciate anything else around you while hunting or just grinning and bearing it and waiting for the 150class buck to show himself? Just seems a shame to me thats' what it's boiled down to these days. I just view "scoring" as a search for validation or approval from others and a tangible way for guys to say that their deer is "better" then others. It is mind boggling to me how some people can have this HUGE brute of a buck on the ground and still need the validation of someone else to say how good a deer it is. It is kind of disrespectful to the animal you just harvested. IMHO, the only reason for scoring is to one-up someone else (read: immaturity). |

Straightarrow, you are correct, there is absolutely a negative connotation in many of these posts implying that there is something wrong with having any curiosity in the score of ones antlers. The comments from atlasman and NY Bowhunter are too obvious for them to be unintentional. To each his own fellas, to each his own.
