RE: My Son's First Deer!

Good point Q2, he could go a long time before shooting another that nice. To be honest I don't think he really comprehends how big of an accomplishment this was. He was mature enough to accomplish the task, but I don't think he understands how fortunate he was.

Now he is still gung-ho about shooting a doe (2 deer limit) so I know that shooting something smaller will not discourage him. We keep telling him that some people hunt a lifetime and never shoot a deer like that but I don't think he is mature enough to understand. Having said that it may be a long time before shooting another like that reminds me of what everyone told me after my first P&Y. The first buck I killed made P&Y and everyone told me that I would probably never get another. I think some people thought it was luck but I hunted 60 hours that year and passed up shots on many does and small bucks. Three years later I killed my 2nd P&Y which scored 20 points higher than the first. It has been several years since but now I have kids and spend much less time hunting. If he has the drive and we continue to hunt the same area I think we can do it again.

Wow what a critter. I have to say you are a very lucky man for getting to experience that with yer boy. He has some big shoes to fill if he is gonna top that one. It doesn't matter if he understands what he did or not the only that matters is that he did it and very well I must add. Congrats to you both. I was lucky enough this year to see my son shoot his 1st turkey. A 23 pounder with a 10 inch beard. I hope yer season goes as well as his has. Good luck to you both.:D

I would guess 141 5/8"

Did anyone else notice the cat or other animal in the pic 5 on his link to his website? It is in the upper left corner. That is a real nice buck. Congratulations. Who was more excited, Dad or Son?

Just curious about that cat?

That's just absolutely awsome ,I'm so happy for your son .He's got one heck of beautiful wall mount there and I'm sure he'll not ever forget it either . He's got the first one and I'm sure many more will follow in it's footsteps.

Truely awesome! Give him a big congrats from all of us!

I'm kind of in the same boat as you and your son. My son can only shoot 30-35lbs comfortably right now , unfortunately Wisconsin doesn't allow crossbows except for the handicapped and over 65 years of age.

Looks like Cardeer wins the booby prize. The gross score was 146 6/8 with a net of 141 7/8".

JoeinNY, good eye spotting the cat. That is our family cat and I did not realize it was in the view when I took the picture. Those photos were taken at our home the day after the kill when we returned home. It was getting too dark to take any pics when we recovered him and besides, I don't track or drag in my hunting clothes..... When they show guys tracking their deer in the hunting videos with their full camo on it cracks me up. All my camo goes back in the plastic containers to remain scent free and I usually take the pics the next day.
