Two Beards Iowa buck
 

I haven't been around here for quite awhile...it use to be my 2nd home:). I've been caught up with a multitude of things, but lately I've been putting in some serious 'tree time'. Not sure if any of my friends from the past will remember me or not[&:]???

Last Sunday, I came within a couple of steps of getting a clean shot at a absolute GIANT-the largest buck I've ever laid my eyes on- but, it was not to be as he avoided my shooting lane and stayed within the safety of the multifloral rose...probably how got to be that big;).

Well, because the wind refused to blow from the north, I was forced to hunt a different farm. Last night, the 10th, with a SW wind and a cold front approaching, I setup on a north-south ridge of locust trees. My stand had pasture behind it and a riverbottom below with alfalfa and soybean fields. At 2:15 I had a small buck come off the pasture above and move off to the north through the trees. At 3:30 I glanced to my right, the same location the small buck had been, and saw what appeared to be a mature buck moving off in the same direction...which was away from me[:@]. I tried some grunts and bleats on my Truetalker, but he didn't even stop to look my direction...which made me think something was going on just up the ridge. Thirty minutes later, at straight up 4:00, I heard running in the leaves. I immediately saw a doe running my direction, her mouth was open and her tongue hanging out. She stopped 25 yards away and looked at her backtrail....15 yards behind her was this buck. The doe trotted down the hill on a trail 35 yards away and the buck headed up the hill towards me. As he was walking, I centered my 20 yard pin on his chest and squeezed the release. He ran a few steps, stopped and looked behind him. Then with the doe looking at him, he went down. Ten yards...30 seconds...no movement at all. I have never had a deer go down so soon or so quickly.....I wish all my trailing jobs were like this one!

He rough scores 159 1/8-gross. He has a small drop, or rather, "teardrop" on the end of the left mainbeam and has a couple inch sticker on the left G-2. We think he is 4 1/2, but I will have the jawbone looked at by our local wildlife biologist.

I briefly contemplated saving my tag for the monster I had nearly had last Sunday, but he was just too nice to pass up. I couldn't be any happier:D:):D. Besides, I head off to Illinois in a couple weeks to try my luck out there.....which I am sure I will need!

Sorry about the pics, these are the best of 24 pictures. Most are badly blurred, as it was difficult for my dad in the poor lighting. I guess I'll have to take more pics when I get him back from the taxidermist!

Great looking deer,OH Iowa I hunted there 3 years. Cant get drawn the way it seems. So I just gave up on it
