RE: VERY NEW
Don't do it is my advice (funny it's the same advice if your getting married:eek:). You may find yourself by passing the shot gun and reaching for the bow. That's kind of what I did. I could never find my shells when gun season came around. I knew I had them just never knew where I put them last.
No seriously, I love bow hunting and would encourage you to try it out. It doesn't take much to get into it. Look after the season ends this winter into used bows. Prices seem to drop then. A pro shop can be very helpful. If you have a good friend who bow hunts, he may have an old bow you can use for a little while. I'm keeping my first bow for my son when he gets older. I did loan it out to my nephew but he didn't stay with it. The reason why I recommend a pro shop is that they can assure you that it is in good working order. A bad conditioned bow could seriously hurt you. Don't worry about not be able to afford the very best. It only takes a bow at 40# draw weight to drop a deer. It does take a very accurate shot though, practice practice and practice. The last thing I will add is hang around on this site. It is full of a wealth of information and you'll find everyone here more then willing to help you out. You may even find a neighbor hanging out willing to take you under their wing. Good Luck. |
RE: VERY NEW
I too am planning on getting my 1st bow in a few months....but I have never hunted before. U think starting out with a bow is a good choice or would I be better off with a gun? I kinda like the idea of the bow and it makes it a little bit harder and skillfull for the hunter.
What would u suggest a do once I get the bow? What kind of shooting scheduale will have me ready for the next season? |
RE: VERY NEW
Skip the gun. My best friend never liked guns but he's a great bow hunter. Talk to the pro shop. You'll find they are more then willing to help. They will also be more then willing to sell you everything. You don't have to go all out just start slow. Just get into a routine. You'll find that shooting relaxes you and is very addictive. You don't need much. A bow, some arrows and a little desire.
As I said before this board is loaded with some really great people willing to help out and give advice. Right now there's buck fever going on and in a few months the testosterone will settle back down and the board will change to setting up for next season. Good luck |
RE: VERY NEW
Look around for the bow before you buy one.Bows are getting pricier every year.I had a bow for 20 years and at the time I bought it,it was top of the line. This year I bought 2 new bows,a Champion Saber for $200 and then my father asked me to buy a Hoyt Magnatec for him which was $175.After I got the bow home,my dad ,who uses a bowlock due to a bad back, couldn't put the bowlock on it so he told me to take it back. The Hoyt never made it to the store. It is very quiet and accurate.I can hit a dime sized target at 12 yrds.,more than you need to be accurate for a deer. The only problem is not to shoot at the same target sight or else get alot of arrows. My point is that there are some real bargains if you keep your eyes open and look around.

RE: VERY NEW
One good thing is that I have a good friend who works at a local Dicks sporting goods in the hunting department. He put together a store display for me and let me shoot some arrows in there range in the back. It was a new Martin Tracer and felt great. It was a 29" draw at 55Lbs and seemed right for me.
I can also get that bow that normally goes for $300 brand new for $175 brand new since i have a nice connection. I've still got alot to learn about tracking, scouting, ect.... |
