RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
Per the email I got with these pictures ...........
On Saturday, 6 Nov 04, at approximately 1130 hours we received a call at the ORC from CB Range Control that a helicopter pilot, that was supporting training here at CB, had seen a large buck that appeared to have a broken back at grid coordinates near GS 77. At about 1200, Preston, Randy O'Neil , and I went to see if we could find the deer. We went to the grid coordinates and our preliminary search did not show any sign of the deer. We did see an area in the tall grass that looked like something had been drug through the area. We split up and Randy went in the direction the drag marks were headed. There was no blood. After a search of about 15 minutes, Randy yelled "here he is". I went back to get the truck and Randy and Preston keep an eye on the deer. He appeared to have a back injury. When I return with the truck, the deer had managed to travel about 200 yards toward a tree line and had fallen or laid down. When we approached the area where they thought the deer had gone down we could not find him, so we searched down the tree line and found him in the tall grass. He was still alive, but when I approached him, I got within 10 yards and he did not get up. I took a couple of steps closer and started talking to the deer to see if he was going to be able to get up. He did get to his feet and started moving toward me at a slow run. He was very unstable on his feet and he went by me and straight toward my truck. He ran into the right front brush guard and went down the side of the truck. Preston was still in the bed of the truck and when the deer went down the side of the truck he grabbed his antlers and hollered that he got him. He just about pulled Preston out of the bed of the truck before Randy and I could get there to help him. We subdued the deer and return to the ORC with the deer at 1330 hours. A. J. Keith A. J. Amazing driftwood rack! I wonder how old this boy is?
|
RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
WOW! You say he had a bad back? That is probably from lugging that headset around all year, lol.

RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
That rack is insane. Antlers amaze me sometimes, I just wonder how on earth that they grow in the directions and shapes that they grow in. I was fortunate enough to harvest a beautiful 9 pointer a few years back, and he was simply perfect, with the exception of two tines that had grown together (the character of this "defect" makes him even more perfect to me), but I have always wondered what determines the direction of each tine. He was also forming drop tines, which also amaze me--drop tines are a puzzle to me. How on earth do some deer form them, and others live a long full life, and never even begin to form them?---
Anyway--beautiful animal with tons of character. |
RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
WOW...that is a huge buck, and character galore.
There is one thing that bothers me a little bit though. The beginnning of the story said that it APPEARED that he had a back injury. The deer had however, been able to keep moving, and when approached was able to get to all fours and mount a bit of a defense, even if it was a bit of an aimless one being he ran into the truck instead of his pursuaints. I've seen bucks a couple of different times in my hunting career exhibit this same sort of behavior. Both of the bucks I saw act in this manner I had watched carry on a rather rough and long fight with a worthy opponent. The losing buck, which in both cases were the ones I watched exhibit this behavior, I figured simply so exhausted from their battles were simply too tired to move. In both cases, I returned to the places where I last saw them the next day to find nothing but a bed. Both times however I saw them later on in season, and my dad even managed to get one of in late bow season. Any of you wonder if perhaps this could have been the case? I mean any deer I've ever seen with a back injury NEVER regained ALL FOUR.....dragging with front two or pushing with back two, but that was it. What's your thoughts? |
RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
I wonder if he broke his back fighting with a BIGGER buck...............good lord I would like to see him. That sucks that he went down like that, now I wished that I did not pass on him last week.[8D]:D..lol.........great deer.

RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
His back was more than likely broken. I had a dog get hit by a car a year ago. He would get up on all fours and walk for a while then its back legs would give out and he would drag himself for awhile. Xrays showed a fractured spine...Unfortunetely we had to put him down.

RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
SapperLohr - Did you see the non-typical I killed in KS last week ? The deer's right antler was all freaked out - and what would have been the brow tine grew across the top of the forehead almost to the other horn before stopping. How did that horn know to stop where it did and not grow into the other antler ? Weird.

its good to see a buck like that grow mature without some one harvesting him
|
RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
what a beast. I wonder what injured him, was it a hunter or car or a fight? Who gets to put that on their wall, i think i would have to fight the 2 other guys for that one.

3.html Oh, deer! Buck's death raises flap Web Posted: 11/12/2004 12:00 AM CST Ron Henry Strait Express-News Staff Writer Over whose mantel the "Bullis Buck" stops, nobody knows. State game wardens are investigating the death at Camp Bullis last weekend of a white-tailed deer, the likes of which no one in Texas has seen in nearly 80 years. The so-called "Bullis Buck" carried antlers with 35 scorable points and an outside spread of more than 27 inches — a monster rack that ranks as the third-largest taken from a native whitetail in Texas. The investigation centers on how the animal met its demise. Preliminary reports indicate the buck was stabbed to death with a pocket knife by Camp Bullis personnel responding to a call about an injured deer on the grounds of the 28,000-acre military reservation in Northwest Bexar County. The means by which the buck was taken could lead to an attempt to prosecute the three people involved and could throw into question who winds up with the record-setting rack, which could have a value to collectors in excess of $20,000. The department's "position is that it is not a lawful means to kill (a game) animal with a knife," said Willie Gonzalez, a warden at the Texas Parks and Wildlife headquarters in Austin. Base personnel, applying the Boone & Crockett Club's standard scoring method, estimated the buck's antler rack at 2651/8 net inches, a figure based on antler circumferences and point lengths. If the calculation is confirmed, the rack would be the largest taken in Texas since 1925, when a buck, found dead, scored 272 inches. The Texas record for a nontypical buck was recorded early last century when a whitetail, killed in the late 1890s and measured years later, scored 2843/8 inches. "Nontypical" antlers are antlers that aren't symmetrical, or even configured side-to-side. The "Bullis Buck" is thought to be the largest taken on a hunt in over 100 years. Still, the circumstances of last weekend's "hunt" may hinder the determination of records and of possession. Indications are that state game officials might want to determine something they consider more important — responsibility. Preliminary reports say two civilian employees and a volunteer worker at the base were involved in the death of the animal. At question are state statutes regarding the lawful means and methods of taking a game animal, Gonzalez said. The Bullis case was forwarded to Danny Shaw, a warden in San Antonio. Because of Thursday's holiday, most state and government officials involved in the matter were unavailable for comment. Access by state game officials onto federal property could be at issue, as well. Wardens normally are restricted from the base, a source close to the incident said. Still, game wardens, as well as officials with the federal Fish & Wildlife Service, have scheduled a visit to Camp Bullis next week as part of the inquiry. The deer was killed about midday Saturday. Within days, dozens of photographs of the rack were spread within outdoors circles via e-mail. Some e-mails included photos of the bloody pocket knife, with a 4-inch blade, which reports indicated was used in the stabbing. Concerns about the legality of the kill were also expressed in e-mail exchanges. On Thursday, one e-mail making the rounds included a photo in which an unidentified man is shown holding the deer. The man's face and belt buckle were digitally obscured. The deer remains in cold storage at Camp Bullis. Because of its unusual configuration, the 35-point antlers are classified as a nontypical rack. A net score of 265 inches would place the rack among the top Texas deer trophies and assure it a place in whitetail lore. However, because of the concerns over how it was killed, said one scorekeeper said, technically, it will not be eligible for listing in the record books. Regardless of official recognition, the "Bullis Buck" is likely to gain legendary status with deer-antler number crunchers in Texas. |
RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
A rack like that is not super unusual down here. I think the untypical racks are the best that there is. Problem is the deer under the rack isn't the bruser that you guys up north might be thinking he is/was. Our deer might hit 150 lbs. but rarely much over that. I think there are an abundance of minerals in their normal browse that results on the antler growth.
Would I have taken him? Only if my heart didn't pop first. |
RE: incredible HUGE 30 point + non-typical (PICS)
" Did ya see da 30 pointer" Wow what a deer! I hope that if they did take him illegally that they are prosecuted to the fullest. It sure does make you wonder how he got injured though. Maybe when the feds take him and look him over they can tell what injured him. Well anyway thanx for the great story and the post.[&:] yep blue with envy.
