RE: finishing shot
I've never had need with a bow, but when I was rifle hunting in MI, I came up on one I wounded. Shot it right between the eyes. Figure I owe it to the animal to get it over with as quickly as possible.
With a bow, i'd probably go for the double lung / heart shot. Seems the best bet for a quick clean kill with an arrow. |
RE: finishing shot
ive had to take a second shot on 3 spine shot deer. the first time I was gun hunting and thought that a quik shot to the head would end her suffering, WRONG! After 2 shots from point blank range right in her jaw she finally expired. no the jaw wasnt intentional, i was looking through the scope non thinking about how close I was. after that happened I have only taken double lung finishing shots. both died within 10seconds.
EDIT: I forgot about a deer that I finished off last year. The only shot I had was from about 30yds bedded and facing me. I put a slug through its forehead. I had already walked to within a few feet of the deer and it killed me to see how scared the deer was when it couldnt run from me and how bad it hurt. I walked back home, got my gun, walked back and took the first shot I could without making it any worse on the deer. |
RE: finishing shot
Well He was just out of range and didnt think he was going to give me a shot., until 3 doe came into the picture and he started chasing one of them. He eventually came right under my stand thanks to the doe. when I made the shot he stepped forward a bit and I hit him high and spine shot him. he dropped right under my stand, He was dying but not quick enuff for me, so I put him out of his misery with one right behind the shoulder. nice lil 8 pt. It was an awesome hunt that night and seen alot of activity.

RE: finishing shot
i was just wondering if it would be hard to aim for the double lung shot since the animal is on the ground laying on its side. I would think a neck shot would be the easiest thing to hit since its laying on its side were the vitals arnt facing towards you.

RE: finishing shot
If your that close to the deer and it's not running, then you'll know which is the best way to finish it off and how to do it. I will warn you that I've known some people to to loose it at this stage a give up hunting all together. To avoid this just make the good shot to begin with and all can be avoided. It's good that your thinking of this posibility now.
