RE: Noise from Summit Viper XL back rest.

Look at the tag on the back of the seat where it raps around the tree. I had that problem and I cut that tag off and no more noise. Thats what it was on my viper hope this helps.;)

Sorry man I thought that would have done it. I would try to hook the stand up to a tree and push and pull on the seat while standing on the ground. Or take the wife out and let her get in it and look close.:):D;).

Wow. I can't believe it but I just started having this problem this year and mine is 3 years old also. It is the sponge inside the seat squeaking. I tried to unhook the bungee to no avail. I believe the padding in mine is ruined from leaving it sit outside on my deck for 2 months airing out. I am pretty sure the padding has also degraded over the years to make it squeaky. Have you ever seen the inside of seat cushions that are old? They make that noise also. I think a new seat is around 30-40 bucks.

I wrapped the metal bars on the back side that touch the backrest of my Cobra x-4 with camo material type tape. It seemed to me there needed to be a barrier between the seat back rest and the metal braces.

Mine was making ALOT of noise anytime I shifted my weight, until I did this.
It's not perfect now, just a WHOLE lot better than before.

A definate labcoat guy oversite IMHO.

RE: Noise from Summit Viper XL back rest.

I'm not happy with Summit as of late. I have a Goliath and have no problems with it or the seat but when I recently purchased a Cobra I found the drop down bar would not line up correctly. Haveing seen a thread here about the same problem and seeing in that thread that Summit sent out replacement tops I contacted them for the same problem. Sure enough they sent me a top but same problem and it didn't have the right hardware with it, it had hardware for the footrest. I contacted them by phone this time and they sent me the hardware but the top was just like the first one would not line up so I contacted them again and another top was sent out. Again the same problem, 3 tops now with the same problem that they told me was corrected. I sent both tops back and said I would live with what I have and that I thought Summit had slipped a notch in quality control. Never heard back from them and from past experience this was very unuseual.

mdbohunter, I'm with you. My cobra x-4 IS NOT what I consider anywhere near perfect. It took my 3 tops to get it right.
Now that I have a correct top the stand itself leaves me reaching for my API grand slam shooting star. I just like it better.
I might sell this one after season if it doesn't do some miracle change before then.

The metal to seat material contact was the oly noise issue with mine.
To wrap the bars in terry cloth would provide the quietest solution, BUT I feel that would collect and hold too much odor.

hhmmmm, i never had a problem with mine. i have a viper xls. I think they are very reliable and safe stands. Just last sunday i was in a tree that had some bad bark, and i slid down it about 5 ft before the summit grabbed back on before i fell the other 20ft!! it may have saved my life, cuz i wasnt wearin a safety harness, like a dumb ass, i wear one now that is for sure.

Right there is another reason I use the brand of climber that I do! I guarantee my climber would not have slipped even one foot.:)
