Making Mock Scrapes
 

Welcome Bow hunters, I'm 14 and got my first buck this year. I was very pleased with a five point and happy as can be. Some of you may think of it as small but I was happy. People hunt bait piles and I find nothing wrong with that but I want more excitement something I could say, "I made that buck came in" I grunted in a 7 pointer a while back but couldn't get him close enough. He's a smart one. But back to the question. How do you make a Mock Scrape to intrege the big boys to be less nocturnal. The are a few buck rubs and I would like to make a mock scrape! Congrats first, on the buck!

Second, Using mock scrapes are tricky. I think a common mistake people make is putting a scrape where they want deer to come. Not where the deer are.
Make a scrape in an area deer are traveling, and don't set up right on top of it either. Remember you can shoot about 30 yards with a bow. So set your stand at least 15 yards or more away. Hunt it with a good wind, and don't be discouraged when you don't see anything. Keep refreshening the scrape. After sometime, if you eliminated any human scent, deer will actually keep the scrape open themselves. Thus, advantage to you. good luck!

First thing in making mock scrapes is be TOTALLY scent free!! Then choose a good area where bucks frequent. Choose an area with an overhead licking branch 3 to 5 feet off the ground. Then scrape out the area underneath the licking branch and sprinkle in aliitle active scrape. The scrape dripper is a great idea. Try to make a few on down the line to simulate a scrape line and keep them fresh. Be scent free and hunt the wind!! If you really want to git er dunn try this link. On the TV show Away outdors the older fellow went into some detail as to how he did it and I thought it was pretty clever. This is from what is left of my memory.

First as stated already, be scent free while doing/touching any and every thing. This guy was wearing latex gloves.

Second as stated already, you want to locate the mock scrape near an existing one that is active. It should have a lick branch above it. He got down and sniffed it! Made a face and said it stunk but that is good. He then used a rake and scratched a 14"x24" or so scrape in the ground. It looked like a deer hoof had done it actually.

Here is where it got weird but also sounded very smart. He had a ziploc bag with him that he had filled by shoveling up another scrape from another farm! An out-of-towner was in his turf!!! He dumped it out and then produced an small bag that contained some of that bucks droppings and laid them out.

Above the mock scrape location he pruned a branch and slipped on a simple PVC pipe "Y" made of what I thought looked like CPVC (for hot water, a little smaller and tanner than reg.) onto the pruned end of the branch. Into the two end of the Y he produced a lick branch pruned from this other farm and slipped it into one of the ends and turned it upward just a little higher than the lick branch at the original real scrape. He said that was to tell the real buck that he was bigger and wanted his doe. In the other he installed a doe lick branch and turned it downward to a doe height. He dribbled some sort of store brand mock scent on it and left for three days. When he came back the mock scrape was 2-3 times bigger than when he left before! He also warned about hunting too close to the scrape.

The a-Way outdoor show on scrapes was pretty good! Bringing dirt from another scrape from another farm is genious! He said he hunted the trail on the way to the scrape, a 100 yards away or so! Very informative show! I recorded it!

I never thought of that. That would be an awesome idea. That way is all natural. Its like transferring an entire scrape from one area to another!! Now I just gotta try it. I wish I woulda saw that episode.

Thanks for all the help guys! I made the scrape today and hopefully we'll see if it makes a difference. I seen four does this morning and we will see how tonight goes.
