Help with ethical question
Hey guys I have a question to ask all of you. The main place I hunt the owner wants me to take him a couple of does during bow season. Now the problem is that I am only allowed 3 deer on my bow tags. He said dont worry about it I am also allowed 3 but I dont hunt so you can take them on my tags. But to me I dont want to do anything that is against the law. What would you do I could loose my permission to hunt there if I dont do this for him and it is a very good place to hunt and I would hate to loose it.

RE: Help with ethical question
Hey Royak, Check with the DNR for your state. If this is farm land or the property is ajoining farm land they may give the owner of the property a few reduction tags. Basically the state gives these out to farmers so they can reduce the deer herd on thier property.
Of course the state has to be able to justify this action and if so make sure he ( the land owner ) is allowed to issue those tags to other hunters. I know some states have this practice and some don't. Worth checking into, solves his problem and yours at the same time. Dave |
RE: Help with ethical question
If this is an agricultural area, check with your F&G dept about getting nuisance permit. If not, take your two does and a weekend job ;)
If the place is really overrun, I could come down and lend you a hand :) Don't jeopardize your hunting license anyone. UR |
RE: Help with ethical question
What if you downed a doe, went and got the landowner, he tags the doe and you take it back to his place. Does this fall into the correct legalese of who can harvest and who can tag game? Probably not. But as long as the deer is correctly tagged who will really care?
Just last year I stopped to help a fella load a huge doe into the back of his truck. The story was a group of deer crossed the road in front of him and this doe hit the fence head on breaking her neck. He tagged the doe with one of his licenses, if a conservation officer had stopped everything would have been legal even though HE didn’t directly harvest that doe. If your not comfortable with any of it then don’t do it. |
RE: Help with ethical question
In Minnesota we can party hunt. One guy can shoot all the deer while the others tag the deer. I don't know if it would be legal to shoot them when they aren't hunting, but I know that party hunting is legal (at least in minnesota)

RE: Help with ethical question
Shoot the does. Let the farmer tag them and if he doesn't want them donate them to hunters for the hungry. Call it the cost of access.

RE: Help with ethical question
Guys this isnt a question of too many deer or crop damage he doesnt bow hunt but want 2 deer for the freezer young does. Now if I dont take them he may get someone else to do it and as of right now I am the only hunter there. He will check them out at the station with a land owner tag. So what should I do.
Funny only 5 replys and over 100 views guess most dont care. |
RE: Help with ethical question
What you don't like, the response you got? Let the owner tag them and him check them in. Why do you care. The state is happy they have paper work and a registered kill. If that is what it takes to hunt that spot then it's what it takes. Most states just say the deer must be tagged before removal from the woods.

RE: Help with ethical question
I say go for it.
You are hunting on your tags, but he chooses to tag it. It is not like you are hunting with his tags. Just don't carry his tags and have him come out and do the tagging himself. |
RE: Help with ethical question
I'd do it.

RE: Help with ethical question
I agree whole heartedly with Fieldmouse on this one. Try to find out how actice the warden is around where you hunt. where i'm at, the wardens rarely bother a bowhunter on private property.

RE: Help with ethical question
Your in a tough one man,
I guess I wouldn't. It wouldn't be worth the fine and the bad name if I were to get caught. A couple of years ago a in the middle of bow season a buddie of mine had surgery on his shoulder, so he couln't shoot his bow. He asked me if I could shoot one for him. I checked with the DNR. It would not be legal for me to shoot his deer unless he was with me and was able to shoot himself. So party hunting is legal here but it was illegal if he was with but could not draw back his bow. I don't know if I agree with that but the law as they say is the law! All it would take is for this guy to tell the wrong person and you would both me in a world of hurt! |
RE: Help with ethical question
Oh man I can't believe the ethics police aren't doing chicken flips over this one. Some jack ass on this site called me a poacher because I realized a couple of weeks after a turkey hunt that I had previously hunted without a plug and here you guys are talking about killing double your limit. I am not going to offer advice one way or the other I am just surprised this post hasn't turned into WWE;)

RE: Help with ethical question
I think it comes down to is it legal to do the shooting and the land owner uses one of his tags. If it is I would ablige the man. If it isn't then you either call it experience and eat doe meat or find another place to hunt. The ethics question just about always has something to do with the law and if it isn't legal its not going to be ethical most likely.
Now I know ethics is something inside each of us to decide upon and legality doesn't equal ethics by any stretch. Just do what is right because it's still your name at the end of hte day. |
RE: Help with ethical question
not my cup of tea there.....to me thats illegal.....even though the guy has 3 tags....hes not killing the deer.....to me thats breaking the law.....find a friend to help take a few out without breaking the law.....or take them in rifle season or something.....WV i always thought you were allowed alot of deer....maybe im wrong.....but its not me to break the law on purpose.....if i wanted to hunt the land and knew i wouldnt be able to without killing these extra deer id find a way to do it legally........but you could get away with it very easily.....and if its you and you want to do it whose going to stop you? just not my style.....

RE: Help with ethical question
boy here in massachusetts we can buy as many doe tags as we want lol.i have 3 right now if i fill those i can go anytime to purchase another.
|
RE: Help with ethical question
I would offer to fill HIS tags stick the does and take him to them unless of course he is old then I'd bring the deer to him
|
RE: Help with ethical question
Thanks guys for your replys. To me it is an ethical question due to where it is at there is no problem with a game warden at all it is his land and he will come out and get the deer. I was just wondering what some of you would do. Yes I can take a lot of deer in WV but only 3 with a bow during the early part of season and he wanted a couple of young does for himself and if I dont get them he will probably just shoot a couple with his rifle and let it go. He is just giving me a chance to take them with my bow if I want.

RE: Help with ethical question
Do the Right Thing.
Something that has stuck with me from the military. I can't tell you nor anyone else what to do when nobody else is looking. Do what is going to allow you to sleep at night. I wouldn't want to be in the situation either, but I think I'd start by having an honost talk with the landowner about your Conundrum. He may value your ethics as much as you do. Either way its your decision ultimately - noone else will be looking. |
RE: Help with ethical question
this is why i love permits that are transferrable, just in case ....:)
|
RE: Help with ethical question
If after checking with your local game management personnel you find out you can do this within the law your problem is solved.
If you are informed that the only legal way to do this is to use your tags so be it. You have to make a choice of whether to trade your Deer to retian hunting permission or become a poacher and use his tags. The only "Ethics Police" you have to deal with is yourself. You're either ethical or your not, there is no middle ground. The aproval or disaproval of the people on this board should not nor does it effect what is or isn't ethical. |

I'm on this site for a few reasons. 1) I, as a 20 year veteran, have learned a lot from my fellow hunters. I have total respect for them and deem all to be ethical. 2) I hope that I have and will be able to help others on this site. 3) I don't want anyone to loose their hunting place. I'm always trying to help other locate more places and get consistently get in front of monsters like I get the opportuntiy to do. I wish you luck this year but only ask that you next post be up front and honest. |
RE: Help with ethical question
Fieldmouse you dont have a clue. The owner doesn't Bowhunt. I guess I should have been more choosing in my words . I did not ask for your respect or even care about it. I was only asking what some of the other hunters would do. The owner could have gotten permits early in the season to take any extra deer that are a problem which most of the landowners that get them kill the deer at night and bury them. And it is legal. Oh and this takes place in the summer months also. He wants a couple to make into burger one way or the other he will get them.
You dont know me or if I am ethical or not so dont even try to judge me by this board. I really dont care what you or anyone else here thinks of me for as stated none of you know me. I have been hunting for nearly 50 years I am disabled and cannot hunt in the places I used to so I value the places I can. As for the EP on this site it is very easy to sit at a computer and tell people that cannot see you what you would do it is quite another thing to be in the woods with no one around. I know you are probably one of those people that never break the law at all. I in no way intended to mislead anyone on this subject and if I did then I an sorry for that. I started bowhunting in 1964 and deer hunting in 1958 I have saw a lot in those few years. |
RE: Help with ethical question
If what he wants is legal where you live then go ahead and do it .
He gets does for the freezer , you help with herd population , you get shooting practice . Check your game laws . |
RE: Help with ethical question
Posted on wrong thread sorry

RE: Help with ethical question
In West Virginia, if you kill a deer and someone else checks it in, you both get arrested if caught. If it is a state where you can do it legaly then great go for it. If not, then do not take a chance on the fine and loss of hunting license.

RE: Help with ethical question
I think land oner tags are different??
|
RE: Help with ethical question
Come on Man! You can't shoot a deer and have somebody else tag it! It's both illegal and unethical, a great part of the pride we have as hunters is gathering our own meat, and on some occassions giving it to others. Not wacking a deer so because somebody else wont. I think the landowner is a cheese ball for having you kill his deer. If it were me I would fing another place to hunt before I illegally tagged a deer. Some game rules can be bent, but not this one.
