News From Shabbona,Illinois

On 10-02, Ron a handicapped person shot a 17 point buck that weighed appx. 200+ lbs. He stated that he shot this animal in a ground blind and it took appx. 3 men to lift the animal into his truck. It is being processed at Headon's Meats in Creston, Illinois.
As for myself, i have seen dozens of deer and shot at a doe the same day when the weather was colder, but my shot was too short. The state park is really vacant during M-F, and i am getting lonesome looking for other hunters LOL:). Well,i hope you other hunters in Illinois are seeing as much as we are here in Shabbona. Good Luck and Great Shooting!

That's awesome. It must be difficult for a disabled hunter to connect on a good buck. IMO being on the ground is a disadvantage compared to being up in a tree espically when dealing with a weary mature whitetail.

This is the type of story that puts a smile on my face. I couldn't be happier for Ron.:)

Congrats to Ron, Great job.

As a side note: if it took 3 men to lift a 200+ deer That's not saying much for the men of Shabbona. :D

Congrates to the the guy. Yep it is difficult to connect with any deer on the ground with a bow.

Katbones, I'm scheduling a trip to somewhere near Chicago next week... I have an afternoon business meeting and then I am free. I was contemplating the idea of stopping and hunting somewhere... how empty IS this Chief Shabbona park? Is that the park your talking about?

To get to Shabbona or Chief Shabbona State Park, which is appx. 60 miles west of Chicago,. Take I-88 to Dekalb,Ill. Then catch Route 23 south about 14 miles to Route 30. You can go 2 ways now to get into Shabbona = follow 30 west about 10 miles and stop at the B-P gas station in town (open 24 hrs.) or go past route 30 as you are on 23, 2 more miles to Shabbona Grove Road. Go west or right here for appx. 8 miles to the state park.
It is First Come/First Served and they allow 29 hunters per day which begins at 5 A.M.
So if your coming Sat./ Sun. be there early = 3:30 or so
