I hunted Iowa this last weekend and saw 36 deer in 3 days. Many ended up in bow range downwind of me. I am a fanatic about scent control except my breathe. Some of the hunts were with scent lock some not. But 30-40 yards out, most of the deer would look up at me as if they knew something wasn't just right when they were downwind. They didn't run off or anything but they were very wary. I think from now on I will take that added measure to help cover my breath by eating apples or doing some of the other things mentioned here.

I do something only while hunting that I never do in real life -

I keep my mouth shut!

I'm a heavy smoker, and I'm pretty sure that I'm just screwed by the fact that even after showering and brushing my teeth deer can still smell the tar and nicotine that's soaked into my body. Theirs nothing I can do about it for now except pay close attention to the wind. But my belief is that odor(and we're not neccessarily talking about death breath like the wife has in the morning) that originates from our mouth is definately an alert to deer of human presence. But who knows maybe Gryan has a point.

If you think about it, we are carnivores as all the predators are. Deer and the animals they dont care about are mostly herbivores and some omnivores that still eat mostly greens. Meat causes different bacterias to grow and thus different smells. Some one needs to do some controlled research on the subject lol.

Yes we do eat meat and I think most of that "smell" comes from the mouth! Meat eaters do give off that odor. We take all these steps to cover out scent but most of us forget about our grills.
