Big Time Kill - Thrill to Experience

Just want to share a success story from this morning with all of you guys. This morning was the first day of PA archery. This day certainly ranks as the one of the best hunts I have been on and I wasn't the guy that killed.
I have been hunting archery for about ten years and have killed many deer. My father has been hunting for about 18 years and all ten of mine have been spent hunting with him. After 18 years of archery hunting, my father killed his first deer with a bow. He downed a nice doe at about 8:00 am.
What makes this story even better is that he almost gave up bow hunting several years ago because of continuous bad luck and poor health. For years he was forced to hunt from the ground because of his weight. He was always caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Well with a great deal of convincing from my brother and I we were able to get him to stick with bowhunting. Over the past couple of years he has lost near 100 pounds and for the first time got into a tree stand. I have never seen him smile so big for as long as I can remember as what he did this morning.
Thanks for letting me share this story and hopefully this will inspire everyone to cherish their time in the woods and keep hunting hard.
Good luck all and happy hunting.

What a heart warming story.

18 years is a long time to keep at it without marked success. Glad to hear you were able to talk him out of quitting! And congratulations to your Dad on his first bow deer - I hope it is the first of many! Still lots of season left ;)

Nice job, to you and your Dad for sticking with it. I have a buddy who is bigger, but is more afraid of heights than anything. He and his Dad got a couple of buddy stands and never blink about getting up in them.
What kind of stand did your Dad use?

Thanks for all of the great replys men, my father has read them and I am sure he appreciates all of them. I believe that the stand he is using is a Grand Slam from API. It has been a good one for him and from what I know he likes it a ton.

Let me tell you this, I lost my best ever hunting partner 3 years ago to Cancer. It was my Dad. He is the ONE who is responsible for teaching me all I know about hunting and much more.
I have to say to any of you guys out there lucky enough to still be hunting with your Dad... man, drink it up as the song goes... cause thats the good stuff.
Congrats to your Pop!

Perserverance!

I couldn't be happier for your dad. As I read it there were two sucess stories. First I'm glad he was able to get his weight down. That can be a tough battle in itself. Then 18 years is a loooong time to go in a dry spell. I'm glad he was able to get it to all come together and get an arrow in his deer. I'm sure he'll be hooked for life now(not that he wasn't for the last 18 years)

My hats off to him:)

Wow what a story. I myself hunted with my father alot growing up, he would even keep me and my brother out of school to go deer hunting. Give the guy a hug and a slap on the back and good luck the rest of the season.
