Broadheads for elk?
 

Just wondering, what broadhead do you think is good for elk hunting?

Anything that you would use for deer i would say is attiquite for elk. Maybe a 1 1/2 inch cutting diameter broadhead at 125 grains. My favorite are muzzys. Youll want to make sure you have enough kennetic energy so you have the highest odds for a complete passthrough. Thats just my two cents.

Stay away from expandable broadheads and get a well made fixed blade model. You might not get adequate penetration with an expandable on such a large animal like an elk. What ever head you select, make sure that you tune your system so that the arrows fly true.

I won't say what is best, but I have tested a bunch of heads, and If I were going to hunt elk, I would be using a Muzzy 100 grn 4 blade, Rocky Ti-100, or a bear Razor-lite in that order. There are a number of other realy good heads, those made by G5, like the B-52 or Monotech are both great heads, Wasp sst's are also very good, and Thunderheads are good on aluminum arrows, or on carbon IF you use the ubar adaptors. The main thing is use a well tuned bow and arrow setup, with razor sharp blades, and pick a quality fixed blade head. I know a good many people use mechanicals on elk, but I personaly prefer fixed blade head to any mechanical on Elk.

I took a Moose last fall with a 125gr. Muzzy. I'll be using them again this fall. Sliced a rib in half on the way through and dropped him in about 50 yards. Should be more than enough for them smaller Elk.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have been using 125 thunderheads on deer and elk on 2315 arrows for a long time. I have achieved complete passthru on everything todate. The combination also flies and groups well for me. I see no reason to switch. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Why do you need the UBAR adaptors for carbons when using the Thunderheads? Will the blades blow out the back end of the head on that particular style? I shoot carbons with broadheads that feature a threaded lock collar to hold the blades in and I see no use for the UBAR's with my particular setup.

The reason you need ubar's with the thunderheads is exactly what you stated. Thunderheads use a O ring to help get good fit and alinement on the shaft. Under heavy impact the O ring crushes and the blades become loose. On aluminum shafts the problem is minor, and the blades stay with the head. On carbons they will fly out the back. This is only under realy heavy impact. If you notice new archery products is now selling &quot;carbon packs&quot; of thunderheads with the UBAR's included with the broadheads. Thunder heads are the only quality head I have found that realy need them.
