RE: Does this sound ethical to you!
Sorry but it is not your land so you don't get to decide who or where people hunt. One sure way to get kicked off of a hunting spot is to act like you own it.
One thing I learned from an old hunter once, is don't go kicking other hunters off or intentionally messing with thier hunts if you are planning on hunting other peoples land. Bottom line is, if your father-in-law wants him there he will stay there. You don't have any more right to the area than he does. There is no first come first serve. This is not Burger King. You can't always have it your way. Is this ethical, fair, that is not your call on someone elses land. If you park on the street do you claim the parking spot in front and behind you too, just because you were there first? |
RE: Does this sound ethical to you!
To those who think that I'm the prick for arguing my point I'd have to say that you are wrong. I've hunted this land for close to 13 years when hardly anyone hunted it. Now there are many who hunt there sporadically.None of you know my father in law and how he reacts when he disagrees with ones opinion (not very nice especially after he has downed a few or more beers). I was very respectful as I always am but I don't always get that respect back. The argument ended up about who got loud and nasty with who which is a habit of his but usually with other members of the family. I just won't stand for anyone to spit words at me no matter who it is. I've never complained or said a word to him to about who should hunt his property because it is not my place to and I could care less who hunts it. This was the first time This situation came up. He wants deer killed because they destroy his oversized garden, but if you add all of the hunters deer harvest from his land against the five that my buddy and I have taken in the last three years they still come up five short (the score is other hunters 0 my buddy and I 5). If I do choose to hunt other land the deer population would surely grow some. As far as being a crappy son in law, I've always been told by him that I'm his only and favorite son in law because he chooses not to recognize the other son in law(for good reason). I just feel like I've been slapped in the face.

Hunting it 13 years and pops lets a newbie move in on ya. Man, that stinks! I wonder why pops is disrespecting you like that?Does pops hunt? If not, would it be safe to say that you are the resident "caretaker/game manager"? Hmmmmm??
3 ladder stands so close, 3 people hunting them, it won't take long to wear that place out. Seems like you guys could manage the situation a little better by spreading the stands out, maybe pooling your dollars and buying a few more stands, organize it a little better. If you feel strongly enough about it, take the guys stand down and leave it at the house. If pops will not back you on it, time to move on. |
RE: Does this sound ethical to you!
5 deer in 13 years? Heck if I were him I woulda let another person hunt the place, apparently he wants someone to control the deer population better. Your FIL might have directed him to that spot?

RE: Does this sound ethical to you!
That's five deer in just the last three years not the last thirteen. We just started hunting this place hard about three years ago when my FIL purchased the extra acreage that we now hunt. Anyway, were the only hunters to take deer off of his property so he should be barking at the other hunters who haven't taken a single deer in that time frame.
The situation was managed just fine so we thought. Our stands were placed at opposite ends of a funnel(that's two stands, now there's three)plus a fixed wooden stand on the ridge far above us. We do have climbers and use them when we feel that we must move because were not seeing game, but that hasn't been a problem because we've seen plenty of deer in this location(it just smells like deer when you walk into it). |

That doesnt sound right to me

RE: Does this sound ethical to you!
i would find another place to hunt, possibly some other land. then i would go to the claim jumpers ladder stand the day before opening day. next i would drop trousers and take a healthy dump at the foot of his ladder stand and lightly cover it with leaves.
this way when he walks in to his stand before light, he won't see his surprise. he'll step in it, climb his ladder and realized what he stepped in. knowing this, he won't have any choice but climb back down (using his hands) where he previously stepped tracking his surprise all over his hands. but this is just what i would do. |
RE: Does this sound ethical to you!
Speeking as a land owner i see no problem with the call to hunt thing. If both partys use it.
We actualy share stand sites here. But we all share the work now. I had a problem last year. I am no longer the nice land owner. If i had 3 of my buddys put a stand in the same general location it would be up to them to work it out. if they could not all 3 would move and i would put my wifes stand there. |
