Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

Is it ethical? Would you do it? They did all the scouting and built the stand. Once when I was a kid it was raining and I knew where there was a stand with a plywood canopy above it and I got in it to keep my bow dry. Well wouldnt you know it about dusk here came a nice 8 pt. Got him. The farmer that gave us permission said he didnt even know there was any treestands on his property. Shucks I didnt even leave a note saying thanks for the use of the stand.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

Everytime I see this topic come up it appears as it might have rules more area specific. Me, I'd never climb in one but I understand where some people do. For example on public land. Building a stand on public land is against the rules in most places, but even if it's not I think it's wrong. If a guy intends to hunt it everyday fine. But building it for the purpose of excluding others from use of the area is wrong. That's why the call it public land. Another reason I wouldn't hunt it is I have no idea of how many people have hunted it or how often. We all know that over hunting an area is the BIGGEST problem with most people. If this stand is one of them, your chances are slim for success. Plus, I don't trust someone elses handy work as far as safety. If on public land and I want to hunt the area I'll find a tree close by and use my climber. If on private land I find out who built it and determine whether or not it's there legally. If not I rip it down, but make sure who's it is or isn't first. I usually just avoid them and hunt near or somewhere else.

I have a permit stand very near public land and from time to time I can tell people have been in it and it is not a problem to me as long as they respect me enough if I show up to give it me beacuse it is not a public land but close enough that they could make the mistake.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

Personally I would never hunt someone elses stand without their previous permission.Likewise I wouldn't want them in/on mine. Now if there are not suppose to be stands built in the area, then it should be reported to whoever owns or is the caretaker of the property. If I climb up in it,then I'm as guilty as the person who put it there to begin with.Since I generally hunt private/posted land, this has not been a problem with me.I mostly hunt alone or with one other person.I think it all comes down to an issue of RESPECT.You have enough respect of the laws/rules to not put up stands where they don't belong, and you have enough respect for fellow hunters to not infringe into areas that they have probably put alot of time and effort into.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

The only time I've ever been in a permanent stand that wasn't mine was when I had permission, but then again I'm fortunate enough to be one of a handful of people that are even allowed to hunt the property, I don't think they should be put up on public property unless you're willing to except the fact that eventually someone else is going to use it. For public land I use a climber.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

WOULD YOU USE SOMEONE ELSE'S CAR IF YOU WALKED BY AND SEEN THE KEYS STILL IN IT. WOULD YOU GO OVER TO THE NEIGHBORS YARD AND TAKE HIS LAWNMOWER AND USE IT BECAUSE HE WASN'T AROUND. SAME THING. I THINK ITS WRONG SINCE MOST PERMANENT STANDS ARE ON PRIVATE LANDS, BEING AROUND HERE IT IS ILLEGAL TO BUILD PERMANENT STANDS ON PUBLIC LAND. THE KEY WORD HERE IS PRIVATE. I WOULD HAVE A REAL PROBLEM IF I CAUGHT SOMEONE IN MY STAND.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

I agree with deerslayer. If you would get mad if someone hunter out of your stand, then dont hunt out of someone elses. Its different if you have permission, then use it to your leasure, but leave it better for the owner of the stand, just like you would a landowners property. As for me letting someone else hunt mind, It would be ok if they asked me and i wasnt going to hunt that stand at that time. I was going bowhunting last fall and when i arrived, someone was sitting in my stand. When i asked him to leave he told me i should have gotten there earlier. I took that stand down that same night. The really bad thing was that i was the only one that was allowed to hunt this particular property, the landowner was furious when i told him about. So, use your best judgement i guess.

i personally wouldn't do it especially from a safety issue(not knowing who built it)

In your situation I would probably woul have done the same thing, being that you had permission to hunt the property. If the farmer didn't know that there were any tree stands on the property than chances are who ever built the stand probably didn't have permission to be there.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

it is not ethical in my eye's.
In our club we have a lot of permanent stands,we have about 30,000 acres.I do not hunt from others stands, and DO NOT want anyone in my stand.I took the time to scout and then time to carrie the materials in and build the stand.there are to many places to hunt.
as deerslayer said, would you get into someones car,or house,or use someting that didn't belong to you?
If a member of our club wants to get someone mad,(not just me)but anyone in our club that has permanent stands, just get caught in a stand that doesn't belong to you.
it is a rule that you do not bother or disturbe any personal property.you can get kicked out of the club, may get a case of whoop a$$ to go with it.
I think that goes right along with picking up someones deer befor the shooter get's to it.
we don't put up with it in our club!!!!!!!

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

I'm with DeerSlayer and treeClimber 100% on this one! On private property it would be wrong to hunt someone else's stand without permission, PERIOD!

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

I hunted property that only my group of 6 had permission to hunt. During one of my scouting trips I came across a beautiful ladder stand that looked like it had not been used for many years & had never seen it before in this area, but I left it alone & went about my scouting. I later asked the landowner & my group if they had put it up or knew who it belonged to & nobody knew.
I left it there for 5 years & never used it & never saw anyone near it (there was a saftey belt hanging over one of the ladder rungs all of this time & never saw it moved).
When the landowner timbered this area I guess he removed the stand & got rid of it but we never did find out who it belonged to & none of my group ever did make use of it.
So I guess I would never hunt out of anybody elses stand.

To me this is just as bad as stealing.

Hunting is nature.
It is our nature to hunt.
I'm not a hunting fanatic just a hunting addict.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

THere are some places I hunt where several different groups have permission to hunt. Some of them choose to build permanent or semi permanent stands. I have never hunted any of them but I have climbed up in them while scouting to get a feel for why the person chose that location.

RE: Hunting in someone elses permanent stand?

I would not hunt some one elses permanent without permission, but as wimp said I to have climbed up in them to check out why it was selected and to gain a better view of the surronding area. I must say the positioning for some of them made no sense to me unless they were rifle hunting and all their shots were 100+ yards.

If it's left from the previous year and it's on public land then I would even though I have never done it.They are to be taken down shortly after season closes so if it's still there then it's free game.If it's on private land then no way...unless I knew the person wouldn't mind.I'd ask permission first.

I would not have climed into the stand. I think that if someone spends time making and scouting for a stand he should be the one that is able to use it.
