Does equipment make a difference?
 

I just bought a new Trophy Taker Shakey Hunter rest and I went to test it out. I bought the camo so it matches the ASAT!:D I shot a 6" group at 30 yards which is great for me. I could never shoot this good with the prong rest I had. Does the equipment play a big role in this?

Honestly? With the group sizes you're talking about, the answer to your question is no. The rest is new. You're pumped. Probably paying a little closer attention to your shooting form than usual. Soon as the novelty wears off, you'll be back to normal. ;)

You need a couple of sessions with a good archery coach. Shrink those 30 yard groups down to 2", then we can start talking about the subtle shooting properties of different rests.

I have been shooting with a coach. I haven't practiced 30 yard groups yet. I just shot 20 yard groups since I would shoot all over at 30. I used to get 9-10" groups at 30 yards. I hope it stays this way!

Good to hear it's getting better for you! I believe a drop-away rest makes it a bit easier to shoot tight groups but in my findings only 1/4" improvement for me. However, i prefer a drop-away because I like an aggresive right helical fletch. Your groups will shrink in time. I always practice more on the long range shooting (50-80yds). Not that I'll shoot at any game that far but it makes me concentrate more on my form, release and follow thru. Gradually work up your long range shooting just like you are doing and in no time you'll be popping 1-2" groups at 30yds. Long range practice certainly makes those shots up to 30 a lot easier IMO.

The equipment is what you feel comfortable with. You did just change the rest. Since this also requires retuning, you maybe closer to perfect then before.

The right equipment can make a big difference. A comfortable bow that feels good, a draw length that matches perfectly to where you anchor is a good start. Then match your arrow with a good rest and broadhead. Tuning the bow to shoot field tips and broadheads can sometimes be a project, but if you take the time to tune a matched system, your confidence will grow and so will your ability. Don't forget, the most expensive items are not necessarily the best match for your setup.
