5" track

I found a nice set of 5" deer tracks on my property. It is measured from the tip of the track to the back of the dew claw. Is this a nice size deer? Can you tell if it's a buck or doe? I don't know if this matters, but the prints weren't inside of each other.

If its not a buck or not Im not sure, but either way it sounds like a heavy footed deer.

I've tried to figure that stuff out and I'll tell you from my expiriences it don't work. You can make a guess about size but not sex. During training my first lab for driving deer spent alot of time reading tracks. I can tell you how old they (this morning, yesterday, or beyond) but gender no. I would go up to the tracks after chasing off a dozen or so and big does leave the same as big bucks except for size. I was told bucks leave the dew claws but I'll tell you they both will in the same mud.

How I learned the time line was to visit the next day and examine.

Good luck.

Including the deer claw... is not the way to measure a track. Depending on angle of hit, running, walking, turning etc the dew claw is not part of the hoof. Just measure the hoof print itself. What you got is probably a skidding track and a dew claw. Can't really tell much of anything except which way it was heading and the fact it's a deer.:D
