Congrats! First deer is something you'll never forget and will replay in your mind at least a million times.
Just a thought Lady Arwen, you mention you feel you lacked penetration from your shot. If the last 1/2" of feathers was all that was sticking out, and the arrow came to rest on the far shoulder/leg bone ... you got good penetration. I've shot quite a few deer with my bow and seen a whole bunch more .. and sometimes the arrow just does not go all the way through. In fact with average kinetic energy set ups the arrow doesn't usually make it through a far shoulder, but it doesn't have to.... if it makes it to the opposite side you have both lungs and you get the deer like you did.
