Can Call

Anyone ever have success using the Primos (Lil - Original - Big) Can Calls?

RE: Can Call

The only time I can say for sure that the "doe in heat bleat" can call has worked for me was up on Anticosti Island in Canada during peak rut.
I was in a snow squall still hunting and decided to sit under an evergreen and wait it out.
While going through my pack I found the call that I forgot I had packed.
I turned it over three times about 5 seconds apart and put it down. Was I surprised when I caught movement off ot my left. A wide racked buck was trotting in my general direction. When I threw up the scope I got and eyefull of snow and quickly wiped it out with my thumb from my trigger hand. When I found the buck in the scope I saw the outline of a very wide rack in the now blurred scope. As it ran through an opening about 50 yds. in front of me I took the shot. The buck went down after a short run. When I got to the downed buck I noticed that it was only a 4 pointer.
2 long tined Y's, 20inch spread with 2 small bumps for brow tines.
I was happy I called him in and got him but was a little dissapointed that it only was a 4. That was until my guide told me that it was the largest 4 pointer that he has ever seen taken from that outfitter.

So, for what it is worth, the call definitely worked there!

I've used it with good success as well. Had a nice sized 6pt come charging towards my stand last year. Had to let him walk because of AR.

I didn't start having success with it until I used it in conjunction with a breeding grunt. A sharp grunt, followed by 3 turns of the Can, followed by a couple breeding bellows brought in more than one buck for me last year. My only complaint about it is that the call itself is noisy given it's holllow plastic construction.

Used one last year. It brought in a huge 7 point right where I wanted him except...I missed! Maybe this year!

As with anything else the time of the deer season is the key. Pre-rut & rut has worked for me. The rut is tough if the buck is with a hot doe, nothing is going to pull him off her.

I used one for 2 seasons and never drew a single deer of either sex .
The call was used throughout the hunting seasons in conjunction with a grunt call , never again . [:'(]

Absolutely!!! I called in a huge buck 2 years ago with the can call. I grunted and he did not respond. When I hit the can call, his head shot up, and he came running. He may still be out there due to a high shot right over his back!!! I still think about that day!!!

A couple years ago, I was in my stand hunting some thickets. I heard a doe bleeting sound...I thought it was my friend walking to his stand turning his can over as he made his way through the woods. 5 minutes later..a doe 50 yards out in a field starts bleeting..and it sounded exactly like "The Can." Right in her tracks...a 6pt buck.

My personal experience with them has been up and down. I haven't called any deer in with it..but it does get their attention for sure.

I can't say for sure I have called any deer in with it but I have used it on deer I have already saw and it seems to get their attention, sometimes they came closer sometimes they didn't.

In the prerut I've had success with the can. Early season I've actually had does come, must think its a weird doe or maybe a lost fawn, don't really know.

It is just like every other call. There are times when it works good and times when it seems like a waste of time. I have used it and called deer right in. The next time they just look in the direction and don't respond any other way at all. I will say that every deer I have called to when they were in sight do at least look in the direction.

I carry two types of can calls, rattling antlers, and grunt tube.

i used the primos big can 3 different time last year i brought home a 4point with my bow the first time i used it the very next day i called in what i guesed would be a VA state record muzzeloader deer and my muzzeloader misfired on a huge 12 point typical with about a 24 to 27 inch spread and the fallowing saterday me and my dad got in the woods at 6:55am and at 7:00am the buck was on the ground a nice 6 point with a 17inch spread (i was doing the calling)

I called in a nice little 6 pointer last year with it, let him walk, hope he is around this year!

I really like my can call, seems to work good for me. Not 100% of the time, but then again not to many things work 100% of the time.

RE: Can Call

I've used one for the last 2 years and have never had any deer respond to it. A few have looked my way over the last 2 years, but none headed towards me. Since the call now has decided to shorten the bleat sound to a sharp 1/3rd of a second sound, I won't be giving it a third year to prove itself. I did call in numerous bucks last year with regular tube bleat and grunt calls.

RE: Can Call

I have been using this call for years.Long before Primos brought out their version Quaker boy had their version. On one hunt I had a hot doe in the area and had seen her being chased.I called in five bucks at the same time. The big problem was now there was to many deer and I was on the ground.I also used it to call in a 156 5/8 typical 12 pointer that remains on my wall.

RE: Can Call

I had the little can untill rain ruined it. Seems water will make it not work. Did call in a one antlered six point. Used it a coule times and that one time was the only response I got from it. Could have been no deer within hearing range through as I was hunting residental. The one response came from public land. Will proablly buy another this year and do my best to keep it dry.

RE: Can Call

IMO it is the best deer call EVER made !!! in the latter portion of the season in the pre thru the post rut i will not be in the woods without my can !!! have called in many many bucks , have even called bucks off of a doe with it! if that doesnt sound good , then i dont know what does!

Go to the primos website (http://www.primos.com/hotshots/album...fe06f46ec867d5) and see the pictures of the deer taken using the Can. Including the 11pt I took with it last year.

Ive used the can alot over the last couple opf seasons.....i have seen it work on several occasions....it definitly works! However, just like any other aspect of hunting, it's not going to do the trick 100% of the time

RE: Can Call

well I hate to say that there all they are cracked up to be but I have had incredible suscess with the can call in conjunction with my grunt call. I have called in bucks that i can see are walking the other way and they turn around and head in. I have never had suscess when the deer is traveling with other deer, seems to work on bachelor bucks. But I have scared them off too, with only one noise and they went all looking at me!!!. So good luck, just remember that they wont always run at you like the videos.

i have used the lil can and the original, and if not used too much they have worked really well for me. they appeal to bucks and curious does as well.

RE: Can Call

I have had mixed results with the big can. On several occasions I have been able to get deer to come closer while using it but on other occasions that ignore it entirely. I believe it really depends, in large part, on what type of mood they are in.

I still do take it with me during every hunt as you never know when it may become useful.

RE: Can Call

The can is nothing more than a contact call. It's a call all deer use when alone and looking for another deer. It's a bleat that rises and then falls in pitch. There is no scientific data indicating that deer make an estrous bleat like is claimed by the "Can". Doe that are in estrous will simply make the contact bleat because they are looking for other deer.

Like Frank said above, it's never a sure thing. Yes it can produce results and when it does it's amazing how deer will come right to it. It's no different than the grunt call...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it's worth having with you in the stand. If the deer are not coming close to you and if by chance, the can or any other call could work, it's worth trying because after all, bowhunting means closeness.......

You can mimick the call of the can with any good grunt tube on the market.....I particularly don't like the can because it cannot grunt so don't buy it as a sole call...you need more than one or like I prefer the Deer Flute by River Valley Game Calls, I can use this call as a grunt as well as a contact call by simply sliding the brass slide....another call is the HS True Talker, however finger placement is key and it's easier to make the wrong call. Any tube call with an adjustable ring can also mimic the "Can"......just bleat with a rise in pitch that drops off at the end......
