whisker biscuit or drop away???????
After getting my new bow last week and shooting it everyday, I have been doing some studying and know that I probably need to be changing my arrow rest from the simple fork prong rest to something else. My question is should I go with a whisker biscuit or a drop away? I do see some advantages in both, but I am curious what all of you think.
Thanks for your help. |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
They both have their pro's and con's.
I own bows set up with both and after my recent experimentation with blazer vanes through the biscuit I believe I have found a true winning combination. Those two were made for each other. In a nutshell, if you like not having your arrow leave the rest accidentally and are in this gig only for hunting then the biscuit will suit you fine. If your looking for extreme accuracy at any range and out past normal hunting distances then a drop away may be what your after. Not that the rest in itself provides accuracy, but set up correctly it can help the whole package become more accurate. |

Biscuit ;)

RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
i think we have done this one to death! ;)
but for hunting my vote is teh bisuit... what vanes are you using DaveC? i have never heard of these... |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
I started using a wisker b. a weekago and I love it. Make sure you get the latest model with the opening in the side to put your arrow in. It's very convenient to just drop your arrow in the rest and then it's there for good. It will be a lil noisy for a few shots but it quiets down as it gets broken in. :D

RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
I prefer to shoot a drop away. As stated both have their own advantages.

RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
Bownutt66!I wasn't a fan of the Whisker bisquit ,but I have friends that use them and I've had to eat my word's espeacially when it comes to hunting with one .I'm a drop away guy myself, with a Muzzy Zero Effect on my BowTech Patriot dually. I personally think it's the best ,but as far as the bisquit goes I don't know too many that don't like it ,so either way you go I'll think you'll be very happy.
Also welcome to the forum ,your in the right spot to get these kind of answer's . nubo |

RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
Bownutt
Like the rest of the guys are saying both have pros and cons........... I love everything about the biscuit except the noise it makes when you draw your arrow. One of the guys in our camp put on a biscuit last year and it cost him a chance at a buck on a cold November morning.........at least thats the story. Just cuious if anyone out there has had similar problems? Good Luck |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
Arthur, perhaps you have not trieda really good dropaway? I wouldn't trade my QAD Ultra dropaway for 10 whisker bisquits, but thats just me.

Thanks guys for all of your great remarks. I can't tell ya'll how much you have helped me. Seems like I can't go wrong with anyone of the choices.
DaveC.....I do have a question for you. I have not heard of those vanes bbefore. Will my local "bow pro" know what I'm talking about when I ask about them? |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
the wisker is the one that just got me a 154 class buck tonite on opening day of bow. new state record in velvet. got state record in velvet two years ago at 143 7\8 with drop away . but am stuck on wisker now ,dont have to worry about arrow falling off rest.

The wisker biscut- I hear a voice inside my head *If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.*
Drop away- I'm love them. |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
The vanes in question are the Bohning Blazer vanes. You can go to bass-pro's catalog or website and see them there. You can pull a search here to find out more about them from others who have mentioned them before.
They are short and stiff. Since your passing them through a bizkit this is a great combination IMHO. bdanger, congrats on the kill! As far as the noise on the draw goes, place a small piece (1" longx.25" wide) of felt tape or moleskin on the bottom portion of the rest where the arrow glides. Start it on the bottom of one side, feed it through the hole and and stick it down on the other side. If you shoot cock up the arrow will glide over this small portion of noise reducer and make the rest much quiter (silent) on the draw. OR switch to smooth carbons and there is no-issue. |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
Go with the biscuit!
|
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
I like the drop away because there is no fletching rubbing at all. The whisker biscuit looks to be a great rest and I have recommended it for persons just starting out. I believe the dropaway would work as well, but the whisker holds the arrow still. I would think that this would develop good mechanics at drawing back. Good luck!

RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
I have the trophy taker drop away and its a cinch. My first bow, a Mathews Legacy, and the trophy taker and no-peep i shot very well to 50 yrds in no time at all. There are pro's and con's. I may try a bisquit on my next bow? Not sure.
Pro of drop away, zero noise on draw, my shelf is fully fuzzy stuffed, so i can nock and arrow and basically swing it right into the riser and let it drop in the groove. I used pieces of 10 Gauge coated wire to create the trough under the fuzzy stuff. Fuzzy stuff the arm on the rest and its stood up to hundreds and hundreds of shot, the arm catches the shelf when it drops...all fuzzy stuff...zero noise on draw or drop and zero contact. Easy to set up. But it does have a string attached to a string on the bow. Simple. I can see the bisquit being the other end...quiet, apparently once broke in, full contact instead of no contact, possibility of fletch wear and tear problems, the need for less fussy stuff, but i would still fuzzy stuff the entrance into and around the outside edge of the bisquit so you don't clang it with an arrow on the way in. Nothing attaches to your string, also super easy to set up. Its a tough one. I hunted my first season without a glitch with my drop away and will do again this season...but my next bow i might just try it....oh another disadvantage is loss of speed with bisquit, although it may not be much...still. Its really a 6 of one and a 1/2 dozen of another type comparison in my eyes. So i'll try both and see what i end up with after i've had some time with both. Eitherway.....it sounds like you can't go wrong. B |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
My Dad had noise with the WB. We used pledge polish on his arrows and it quieted them. Spray some on a rag and wipe. Wipe excess and polish with dry rag. Do this early so the scent will dissipate before season.

RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
Biscut by far hear is why no strings attached that string makes your bow noise louder with the biscut just a pffffft i will never buy a nother rest in my life why because all i have to do is replace the wisker ....
and let's say your arrow will never fall off your rest and makes no noise when u draw your bow ... it;s a 3 wins for wisker biscuit 1.your arrow will never fall off 2. no noise on draw back or when u shoot # 3. nothing to brake when putting your arrow on the rest.....so buy a wisker biscuit and get that big buck when he is close .... big al in bowmansville ny wny |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
My vote goes with the biscuit as well for a variety of reasons.
1. From a setup standpoint the biscuit is so much easier to use. No linkages or potential effect on the timing of the cam(s). 2. Full containment. 3. Very quiet to draw especially on carbon arrows. 4. Very easy to maintain (biscuit replacement). 5. Relatively inexpensive. My only real issue with it though is speed reduction and vane "damage". I had the opportunity to play with one of the new biscuits on my bow recently. With a regular prong style rest the bow was shooting 271 fps. With an untrimmed, brown-bristle biscuit the bow shot 267 fps. With some trimming I got that up to 268 fps but after two dozens shots through the rest the vanes started getting wavy. A stiffer vane design is definitely warranted. Good luck with whatever you choose. |
RE: whisker biscuit or drop away???????
I own bows set up with both and after my recent experimentation with blazer vanes through the biscuit I believe I have found a true winning combination. Those two were made for each other. All I can say is WOW! After reading a reply of yours in another thread awhile back I decided to try out the blazer vanes....glad I did!:) It's amazing how those little boogers stabilize an arrow. I also slapped on some 100gn Muzzys and at 30 yards (outdoors) they were hitting exactly where I wanted them to go. I also believe the blazer vanes give the least resistance (causing the very least minimal speed loss) comared to any other fletching combo. I can have a dozen arrows fletched in an hour easily. I've never tried the fastset glue before so I was amazed at how fast I could fletch an arrow. I've never been a fan of vanes before just because of the arrow/head combo I prefer to use the extra weight of the vanes would drop my foc well below my liking. Now with the blazers I am right at 11% where I prefer to be. Thanks Dave! |
