To Pee or Not to Pee
 

Trying to get responses concerning urinating from a tree stand. I have contained it and I have just whizzed over the edge and have never been able to ascertain whether it has any direct effect on the deer. I have deer hunted for over 40 years but wanted others opinion on this issue.

When u gotta go u gotta go, just drink apple juice and smell like apples,lol. Nah i heard deer are attracted to human urine in a scrape??? I never tried it, but i just hunt the wind i dont care.

I carry a pee bottle. Usually someing like the gatoraid kind. You know with the BIG mouth.

Just can't get myself to think that peeing in the woods would be a good thing.

I have read articles saying they can't tell the difference. I have never noticed anything good or bad personally.

I've done both - I don't think it really matters either way as long as the deer don't see or hear you wizzin.

LOL another thread gone bad;).

T.R. Michaels had posted about this subject back when he was still moderating T.R.'s Tips. Basically the study said that animal urine and human urine are made up of essentially the same componets. Long story short deer can't tell the diffrence.

I tried to find a link to the post but it appears to have been removed when T.R. left. It's too bad. He's a wealth of information.

Now I don't go around telling this to everyone, and if you promise to keep it between us, I'll tell ya a story that happened to me last year. I was in my stand when the call of nature came, and I'm not talking #1.
I had to just about jump out of the tree, that's how urgent it was. I started running down the trail and got about 30 yards from my stand when I was forced to make a decision. Go here and now or go home with a smelly kind of mud in my shorts. Well I let her go right on the trail, nothin I could do. I tried to bury it as best I could. The next week I missed a monster. He walked right over the same spot in the trail and didn't pay any attention to it. If you gotta go #1 though, I don't see why you would let fly when it's not that much trouble to get down and walk 75 yards or so downwind and return when done. No sense taking chances when you have a choice.

By the way, what do you bottle pissers do with the bottles and the pee after the hunt?? Always wanted to know the answer to this.

My Dad hasn't been seeing many bucks where he puts his stand. I've been seeing lots. He keeps accusing me of peeing at his stand. I, of course, deny it.

i just try to not drink a lot before leaving for the stand during the day...i chew gum to keep from getting thristy...how can you not figure that a deer can smell you down wind even with a scent lock suit or something like that on so how can you think you can get away with peeing in the woods.

Ever notice how strong it smells to you so how far away do u think the deer can smell it... i can imagine it not bothering a yearly or young doe but has anyone seen it not bother a 100 inch buck or better???

I dump out my bottle when i get to the car,then recycle that bottle.I've also pissed off my stand on them cold days when i forgot a bottle,I dont think it matters at all.And in reply to what livbucks said bout number 2 I dont think that matters either.True story About 8 years ago i was in upstate ny scouting 2 weeks before the season,Same as livebuck I had to go and go now,Due to,to much bud the night before.Anyway I climed down dug a hole at the base of my tree about 8 inches deep and went,I SWEAR ON THIS May I NEVER GET ANOTHER DEER THE REST OF MY LIFE,About a hour later a spike and 3 does came walking by and he went right to the hole sniffed for a few seconds and kept grazing.By the way I did cover the poo back up.But after that day I do belive our number 1 and 2 does not alarm deer.

I hunt alot, I take the whole month of Nov off of work, and hunt all day sunup to sundown, and I pee from the stand everyday, I feel that it doesnt matter, Ive had bucks walk under my stand, and I know they had to tread right through my puddle, with no alarm. Now I've got another twist to add to it, how bout dippin in the stand, anybody ever seen a deer act weird about spittin on the ground..... I chew the Skoal Vanilla, I actually had a deer come up and lick my spit from the bottom of the tree last year, I dont know if it was the vanilla smell or what? Any thoughts??

True story.....two years ago on a cold thanksgiving day, my 12 year old daughter and I were walking towards a spot I had picked out for our 4 day doe season. All of a sudden the call of nature came and I could walk no farther. I told my daughter to continue to the spot we had picked so I could relieve myself which I did on a nice little pine sapling. About an hour after we had settled, a nice big boddied doe walked out at that very same tree I had releived myself on. She was about 50 yards away and my daughter lowered her .243 and dropped the doe for her first kill. We harvested 2 does each that day in that same area.

My belief is that it does not make a difference. I have read about it several times and the deer cannot tell a difference between human urin or animal urin.

I pee out of my stand and i Buck scrapes. Been doing it for years. I even took a few #2's from my stand. That does however have a effect on deer[:'(]

What do you do, hang your tail over the edge? That is too extreme for me. I would have to get down for sure, yep.

From the research I have done it seems human urine does not have any pheromons and deer can't tell if its from predator or prey. I my experience deer just sniff and go about their business. On occasion they may even go out of their way to take a sniff......might even work in you favor.

I say pee. It doesn't seem to bother them one bit. Its especially fun when there is snow on the ground and you can try to write your name from 20ft up a tree.:D Thats a challenge!

mossy...I dip in the stand also, great way to stay awake. I have seen the same thing you have. I have actually had deer on several different occasions sniff around were I spit. I dip Kodiak Wintergreen. I am not sure what the deal is but it doesn't seem to bother them.

I've never had deer react adversly to urine or my Skoal Straight spit. I'v had deer come right up to the bottom of the tree and sniff both, but never spook.

I experimented with this idea last year. Peeing in scrapes only made bucks mad. One scrape was doubled in size the next day. Urine is urine for the most part. If you don't think so, pee in the yard and turn a dog loose. He will pee in the same spot to mark turf ,he can't distinguish the difference. Human scent on trees & ground from boots make him more skittish than pee. I am going to keep experinmenting this year.

If meat hunting tho, sometimes fresh pee will spook scrub bucks.
I believe they think a bigger buck is in the area.
But does and more mature bucks don't seem to notice it.

Just curious techy, but who in the world told you they can't tell the difference? Okay, you can tell the difference between dog pee and deer pee right? Don't you think that they can??? Just something to think about....

For you lady hunters. For my experiment with pee in scrapes. I ask for volunteers to pee in scrapes of save your urine and pour it in scrapes if you don't want to drop your drawers in the woods(remember to refridgerate it to save it) but the fresher the better. It needs to be from the middle of your cycle when ovulation occurs. I want to see if bucks can pick up on this peak of hormones. Please keep me posted on your results & observations

I USED TO PEE ALL THE TIME,, BUT NOT NO MORE, LAST YEAR I TOOK A PEE OUT OF MY STAND AND ABOUT 3 HOURS LATER I HEARD A CRASH BEHIND ME, A MONSTER 7 POINT WAS IN THE THICKET AND HEADING FOR MY STAND , HE WAS APROACHING FROM THE LEFT WITCH WAS THE WAY I PEE,ED I CAME TO FULL DRAW WHEN HE WAS AT 20 YARDS STILL IN THICKEST STUFF YOU EVER SEEN , HE CAME ON A STEADY WALK THEN STOPED DIRECTLY UNDER MY STAND PUT HIS NOSE ON THE GROUND AND RAN OFF SCREAMING LIKE A GIRL ,,,,,,,,,, I USED TO SAY IT DONT MAKE A DIFFERENCE BUT THIS ONE TIME IT COST ME THE BIGGEST BUCK TO DATE

Have you guys that drink coffee, never noticed that sometimes your pee smells like coffee?
I have....and as a result, never let rip within half a km of where i hunt.

Just wondring if any of you who piss out of your stands/in scrapes etc. also use urine cover scents/attractants (coon, fox, doe, etc)?

Seems like that would be a waste if the deer can't tell the difference right?

if i cant wait until i get out of the woods i go right off the stand. before i go i take a good hard look around to make sure nothing sneaks up on me.
