Morning hunt, or not
One farm I hunt has a planting field right behind the house, clear across the property. It's about 200 yards deep. One year it's corn next it's beans. I know the deer are in there most mornings before light. I can't acess the back woods from any other side. I have spooked deer out in the past coming in, in the dark. I love morning hunts though. I know there are some nice deer feeding there. Is it worth me scaring a few deer to get back to my stands? I don't want to chase the local bucks away right at the begining of the season. If I could only get in from the back side[:@]

RE: Morning hunt, or not
yes morning hunt be stick with the hunt till dark. Only 17% of deer were takin last year in the morning and over 36% from 2pm-6pm.

RE: Morning hunt, or not
Are you trieng to say that 53% of the deer were shot around noon? I think you missed the point. If I have only a slight chance of seing deer I will be sitting in the trees. I just don't want to scare the deer away from feeding there.

i think you will b fine if u can stick in the stand the later the better cuz even if u scare some away more should come by and u should catch the ones u scared in the morning on their way back to bed. i have scared deer walkin to my stand and have seen deer 10 minutes later

IMO...Id stay away from fields in the mornings ...most of the time any way. However if you do hunt them in the morning go ouy verry early and try to cross verry slow without a flashlight....If that is even possible. I know one field I used to hunt well enough that I would turn off the light at a certain point and stand in the dark for several min so my eyes would adjust. an then i would creep across. sometimes I would get busted...but you would be suprised how many times I would see the siloette of deer messing around, oblivious to the fact...but ya gotta keep the wind in your favor....

I would wait until there was a little bit of light to make sure nothing was in the field, then go in. Or find someway to scare them out of the field temporarily, like with a 4-wheeler or your truck. Deer see these a lot and might run into the woods and wait for it to be clear and come back out, giving you an opportunity to sneak in.

I would just try my hardest and be creative on finding a way in without spooking anything.

RE: Morning hunt, or not
Personally If I we you I'd wouldn't want to run the deer out of the feeding grounds. If you can avoid putting unneeded pressure on the deer I would and I think you'll benefit from it. Are there any draws or ditches you can pass through that'll conceal your passage across the field?

RE: Morning hunt, or not
I would not hunt the morning. I hunted a similar site last year and couldn't get in the stand early enough. I ended up messing it up, and had to switch spots. When are the deer leaving the area? Can you set up a blind or a stand on their exit trail? Good luck!! Let us hear how you did.

RE: Morning hunt, or not
I would cross the field on the most downwind end and I would say to go VERY early in the morning. I mean hours before first light. In the pitch dark, deer have the tendency to skirt you but not leave. they know that you can't see as good as they. Once you are gone and not a threat they will relax and forget somewhat if you allow enough time between entering and when they leave the field. Once you are beyond the field, skirt THEM and setup behind where you think they will be feeding. They probably wont exit the field where they think you went. Just my take....
