Different poo consistency, a myth?

As we were scouting one day and happened upon a pile of deer poo a friend of mine told me that he could tell it was a buck. I asked how he could tell and he pointed to the pile we were standing by and said that because the poo was kinda meshed together and not real solid seperate pellets. SO the thing was the poo was clearly deer poo but the pellets were meshed together like the thing had the runs a bit (but not completely liquidy). You could still make out the pellets in it.

So is this true? I've never heard anything like it and I've been addicting to hunting magazines for going on 3 years now (not that it makes me an expert)... I figured I would have heard something to that effect. So I pose my question to YOU, the experts [8D]

It just depends what they have been eating. There is no way to tell the sex.

Not true for pen deer...

I've not noticed it in wild deer either.

I would have to say that is a myth. I cannot tell a male and female dog apart from their droppings why would deer be any different.

Are you talking about turds that are big and fat and it is like alot of smaller "pellets" formed into a big turd? Yes, this is the telltale sign of a 12 point PY buck. No doubt about it......I'm positutely absotively certain.

Seriously..
Big animals generally have big droppings compared to younger animals.
The little tiny perfectly round droppings you see are usually made by this years fawns. The larger, slightly oval shaped pellets are usually made by the 1.5 and 2.5 year olds. When you see a huge pile of crap, its probably safe to say your looking at a mature deer's dookie. As their digestive systems mature they put out larger stuff. Can you tell the sex? Not in my opinion. Maybe does and bucks have a different taste to their crap. Check it out and let us know the results:D

If it's meshed togethet..it mean's they've been eating mainly on grasses....

Here in Jersey we call them rabbits
Now come on, give a guy some credit..
We all know that rabbit poo has it's own distinctive aromatic flavor, and can easily be distinguished from the common Viginiannis patte'

actually ive heard the same thing about the piles being froma buck,, but never put much stock in it,, you hear that stuff from the same guys that can tell a buck track from a doe track:eek:. anyway im all for what they said about you tasting it to see for sure,, i bet the buck turds will be tougher! The way i see it-- big turd-big deer/little turd-little deer/big track-big deer/little track-little deer,, just my two cents worth.

I've always heard that "clumped dump" is made by a buck also, and that pellets are does.

I'm not sure it's true...apparently others here don't believe it at all...I really do think that it depends on what the deer are eating though. Perhaps, that can help you out more than anything else. Good luck.

I ate somethin wrong tha other day and my poo was a lil runny but that doesn't make me a she. I think your friend is full it. [:'(] BUT!!! I'm in favor of tha taste test too. Give er' a taste and let us know if it taste's like a buck or doe. Next time I'm out and see some I can ship you a sample to try. You could probably make a successful business out of it if you put it together right. :D:D:D

It's funny you should bring this up. I've heard that myth as well but have seen nothing that documented it or read nothing about a study being done. .

I guess it's rural myth.

Clumped up together usually means the deer are feeding mainly on grasses, and smaller hard shiny pellets usually mean they are feeding on woody type browse. This is sometimes a good clue where to find the deer feeding in the evenings.Have you seen them feed?If so what were they eating?
