Why sharpen the blades?

I often see reccommendations to sharpen broadhead blades before using them for hunting, even if they've never been used before. I have used Thunderheads and Muzzys now, and both of them have easily shaved hair right out of the box. I seriously doubt that I could make them any sharper than the razor sharp factory edge. Someone prove me wrong here. How do you get a better edge than that of an x-acto blade?

They say this becasue the blades dull just from oxidation, and bouncing around in your quiver or archery box. I didn't think they dulled that much, but they do. Hope I was of some help to ya.;)

So what do you use to sharpen them, and were you able to achieve the original sharpness?

Do a search on sharpening blades.

There was a great discussion within 2 months about this - its a great thread to read.

Tells why we need sharp blades, and several ways to get them sharp. Good Luck

I too shoot Muzzy's and I find that they don't always shave hair right out of the box. Personally i want the sharpest cut possible from my broadheads so I choose to go beyond the manufacturers standards.

There is a great thread about this over at ArcheryTalk : http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showth...threadid=76523

That thread is a pretty good one, I use the three blade version of that stone and it does work as advertised, I never used to sharpen out of the box when I used Thunderheads but the Muzzies definatley need a touch up. I just got some Stingers yesterday and those things are scary sharp.

Here's a great article posted by rangeball in the tech forum(I should mention he indicated it was originally posted by Derbytown @ AT)

Basically the sharper the blades the better the "clean" cut. The better the cut the better the bleed. The better the bleed the quicked the animal expires and you can recover you game.

But, if you can shave hair with them from the package I'd say you are good to go. It'll be tough to beat that edge. Ausie had posted instruction on b-head sharpening
