Are there any easy ways to hang a stand??
Man I busted my butt hanging a stand Saturday!! I used 2 things to make it easier. I bought 16' of climbing sticks and I used the linemans harness with a strap around the tree. Getting the sticks up was so much easier than the screw in steps. But after that ther wasn't nothing easy!! I tried pulling the stand up by a rope, nope that didn't work! So I then did the only thing I could think of, I carried the stand up with my right hand while I held on to the tree with my left. Once I got up there I jammed the stand up against a small limb and caught my breath. After I caught my breath I pulled the stand to where I wanted it hung, pulled the strap around the tree, clipped it in, and went down to catch my breath. GOOD GRIEF THIS IS HARD WORK!!
I went back up to reinspect my work and make final adjustments. I noticed 2 problems: the strap had gotten one twist in it on the back side of the tree and the clip was on backwards [:@] , I also noticed that when my cousin put the stand together he apparently forgot (no wrenches?) to tighen the bolts on the bottom platform where the cables go in [:@] [:@] [:@] !! After seeing this I had to get off that tree!! I headed back to the house to drink some water and cool down. Man it was humid. I figured I would fix the stand on the next trip down to the farm. After drinking some water I decided I had better head back to fix the stand. Somebody else may want to hunt the stand, I don't want them to fall out!! So I took my ratcheting strap and a few wrenches with me. I first pulled the stand all the way against the tree with my strap then undid the stand strap to turn it around. I then tightened the bolt on my side of the stand. I thought, and thought, and thought but I couldn't think of a way to tighten the other bolt without getting on the stand? So I made sure my lineman's harness was tight, gently and carefully climbed onto the stand. Why is it shaking? Oh, that must be my knees :D . I leaned over the stand and tightened the bolt. OK!! I stood up and sat into my newly mounted stand. Man that was stinking tough!! Are there any eaiser ways? I guess if the stand was ready before I hung it would be tip #1. The climbing stick sure made life easier. I figure when I use my screw in steps I will use a tool belt to hold my steps. How do you guys hang your stands?? Steve |

I have been thinking about it.....ya' know if you put a screw step in near where you wanted to hang your stand you could use that step to hang the stand while you caught your breath. then lift the stand up enough to strap it on. I may try this on the next stand

I go over my stands in the garage to make sure all bolts are tight, staps are not frayed, no sqweeks etc and the stand is in safe working order before I attempt to hang them. I wear and use a seat o the pants safety harness and climbing system..... makes it possible to to stand on the steps with your hands free to work. I have found a great aide to pull the stand up.. I use a Treestand Versa Hoist made by Rutherford Outdoors
www.rutherfordoutdoors.com I screw in a step above where I will hang the stand and hang the versa hoist on it with it attached to the stand by the rope and clip provided , it works great and I am not having to lift all the stands weight and once the stand is pulled up and hanging by the versa hoist it leaves me hands free to work on the stand. |

Once I have my climbing stick or steps up and secure, I take up a pulley and hook it to the top rung or the very top of the stick. It's a rope pulley, very light, they are sold at WalMart(2 for about $10, in with the tie downs). They come with a twisted 8' rope, but I put a 1/4" braided 50' rope in it. It has a stop on it too, holds the stand at your desired height. While on the ground I pull the stand up, locks at the height, then I climb up. Slick as can be. You won't feel like you've been beat around the neck and shoulders with a bat!!
Yea, like Lady Forge does! Sorry Lady Forge, didn't see your post before typed mine. |

I just got a linemans harness this year and boy what a difference. It's so nice to have your hands free to work. I tie a rope to the chain of the stand and pull it up, put it in place and use a ratchet strap around the stand to hold it in place while I connect the chain. Then I use the ratchet strap at the bottom of the stand to hold the bottom to the tree so it doesn't give me the slip.
I've heard of people using their climbers to get up the tree, then pulling the stand up, setting and then placing steps in the tree on the way down. |

Buy yourseld some tree spikes, I am a tree climber by trade, and using my tree spikes to set my stands and climb in and out of them is by far the easiest way for my. But you need to get used to spikes. and be sure to use your safety harness.

When hanging a stand alone I use the eye bolt to my tree stand lock to get my stand up in the tree. First I run my tree steps up the tree to the desired height. I then place the eyebolt and run a 50' piece of small rope and feed it through the eye until both ends touch the ground. I tei one end to the stand, hoist it up and tie it off to a near by tree. I them climb back up and secure the stand with the strap and remove the rope. Then I install the stand lock.
It takes the better part of 45 minutes for me to hang a stand alone. |
