Snacks for the woods

I am planning on hunting the whole day for my first day. I know I can't make it though the day without a snack. What snacks would be good for hunting? Something that wouldn't bother the deer.

Apparently NOT M&M's. My buddy blew a shot on an 8 pointer last year because he was "eating M&M's." Needless to say I don't think he'll ever eat another one now. I'm laughing just thinking about that story.

I take granola bars, candy bars etc. along with me...and sometime peanut butter sandwiches. I also like to take along deer jerky when I have it made.

Make sure to take the granola, candy bars etc. out of their wrappers and put them in small zip locs. That way you dont make all kinds of noise opening them up.

Good luck!

Pick a squirrell, any squirell, archery shots are quiet and i dont think a deer would miss a noisey old squirell any way. I like apples though.

I usually pick up a pre-made deli sandwich the night before and put it in a small ziplock bag, then I will pack an apple or two, a candy bar (as springgobbler mentioned, take them out of their wrappers) and a large bottle of water.

Granola bars, any type of jerky, grapes, sandwiches..if its cold and you're trykng to keep warm, eat peanuts. i read about it in field and stream. i always have a bottle or two of Gatorade in my day pack. No pop, becuase it makes you pee, the caffeine is bad for your nerves, and it makes too much noise.

Early season my trips are pretty short 2 1/2 to 3 hours but as the rut gets closer I hunt longer and longer. Each year I look forward to hunting October 31 and later.......Why? simple.....pockets full of Halloween candy. It might not be the best thing to eat but for the last 25 years my I look forward to lots of Halloween candy on the stand!

GoodLuck!

Well, first off make sure you get a GOOD breakfast before heading out if possible. Pancakes, oatmeal, eggs, and toast. Something that is going to fill you up and stick with you during the morning. In my pack I usually have a Deli sandwich I pick up on the way to the spot, a candy bar, a Gatorade, and a canteen of water.

On a side note, I find it funny that people are mentioning foods that will have a distinct smell. I hope those of you who mentioned candy bars and jerky didn't spend hundreds of dollars on Scent Lok, what a waste!

If you are going to spend the whole day out (from dark to dark) I assume you will be having a morning meal first.
I do just that on occasion... I pack 3 apples, 2-3 frozen bagels (they aren't very big and thaw on stand) a chunk of cheese and/or some lunchmeat or jerky and quart of water. Maybe a candy bar or two..depending on the size of my breakfast.......

P B& J, but be sure to put the peanut butter on both pieces of bread and then jelly in the middle, keeps the bread from getting soggy!

Looks like a lot of us take the same things. I do not take coffee because of the smell and I always eat an apple before I get to my stand to cover the coffee smell on my breadth. I also take PB&J or ham sandwiches, apples, cut up fruit, nuts, lots of water, pop tarts taken out of the foil pack, anything that will keep me in my stand. Food also helps me keep warm. When I start to get a chill I'll eat something. That seems to give my body that extra boost to stick it out longer.

I usually pack fruit and granola bars with me to munch on while hunting. Nothing like a juicy apple to bite into while deer hunting. Just a question though if i throw the core on the ground but im not intending it to be bait could it still be considered baiting???

zak,

You are in for a long day. I hunt all day a lot but I do it later in the year when the days are shorter and the deer are moving more in the middle of the day. I don't think you will see much deer movement except for early and late and you might burn yourself out if you start hunting like that so early in the season. Remember it's a marathon not a sprint;)

When I get hungry, I just pop a doe and grill her up. Actually, jerky, candy bars, water.....etc....

If deer smell the food or drink, they probably wont spook. unless that smell is directly associated with a predator, ie the smell of a coyote, they wont spook but if they see you eating it then they probably will turn tail and run.

Full lunch and snacks if I am planning on being out all day. If only for a few hours to a half day...and apple and bottle of water will suffice. I tend to leave a soda in the truck with pretzels or banana to enjoy on the ride home.
