RE: What every newbie should know

These are things I have learned from either my experience or someone elses. (mostly mine)

1.Find out exactly where your stand is before you are hunting. You might know where you are but if you can't find your stand you'll have problems. Happened to me twice. (luckily he had a witness)

2.If the deer falls down but then gets back up, shoot it as many times as neccecary.

3.Always keep more than one shell in your gun. You never know when you might eject it.

4.Always approch a downed deer as if it were alive. It might jump up and run off making you eject your one shell.

5.This is something my dad told me. If you approach a bedded deer and it's eyes are closed. It is most likely sleeping and not dead. My grandpa had a deer run off with his knife once.

6.If the deer falls down but then gets back up, shoot it as many times as neccecary.

7.Keep your gun clean and in working order. When you have a big buck come up on you you want it to fire. Happened to my dad twice while I was with him.

8.Do not run after your deer after you shoot it. Let it lay down.

9.Keep you liscense and tag where you can find them easily because they are easily lost.

Numbers one 1-4 all happened in the same day. Hopefully someone will learn from my mistakes (I know I did) so that they can have a better hunting experience. I can only hope history will not repeat itself.

Oops I forgot I was in the bowhunting forum. Oh well. Those were all from gun hunting but you could probably learn from them anyway.

When you get to your spot, in a tree or on the ground, test everything. Try drawing your bow from every angle and shooting lane, this will let you know if you have all your limbs cut and clothes out of the way. Also do a gear check. Where's your pull rope? Did a chunk of bark or grass get stuck in your release? Make sure all the essentials are operational. Most of the time it's the little things that get ya.

Once you find the perfect location for your stand/blind. Make it comfortable. If you arent there or cant sit still you'll come home empty handed with a sore but.

only beleve 1/2 of what you hear, 1/4 of what your read ,, 1/10 of what you see on TV, and 100% of what you learn for yourself. go farther, go where others don;t go, get there earlier, stay later than the other guys and you will see more deer than the other guys, gauranteed.--- good hunting

RE: What every newbie should know

You will spend a lot of time waiting for a shot than actually shooting.
If you don't get a little buck fever whenever you see any deer, then it is time to stop hunting.
Always respect your capabilities, the landowner, and the animal you are after.
