how manny g.p.i. for hunting?
I was wondering how many g.p.i. do you use for hunting whitetails? Also, what is your total hunting arrow weight? Do you use mechanicals? I am switching to spitfires this year, and was needing info on if i needed to go to a heavier arrow, currently use ultimate steel 100 gr.,and shoot 3d, my fixed blades shoot very accurate but not really close to my field points. I am looking for the same accuracy when switching back and forth.

You will need I think 50 # of KE for mech. to work properly. There are an infinite amount of combinations to try, but a good rule of thumb is 6 gpp. I shoot 5.6 gpp, and this works very well with my set up. The key is to get the most speed with the heaviest arrow combination. Remember, a 450 gr arrow going a little slower than a 400 gr arrow may give you more kinetic energy and momentum, so you gotta get the combination right. Also remember, that the lighter the arrow, you will get a little more noise at the shot. Start at 6 gpp and go from there.

My total arrow weight is 449.58g. My shaft is 29.75". Total grains per inch 15.12g.
I consider this to be middle of the road for hunting arrow weight. My set up is with a carbon arrow. Guys shooting aluminum shafts may be upwards of 18g per inch. Grains per pound is a better way to calculate a weight to shoot deer. Someone shooting a 30 inch arrow at 50lbs generaly won't be nearly as heavy as someone who shoots 30 inch arrows at 74lbs due to a stiffer spined arrow weighing more. 6 gpp is suficient |
RE: how manny g.p.i. for hunting?
My arrow weight is 400gr arrow lenght 27.5" for a gpi of 14.54
