adams, correct me I'm wrong, but from my experience in Maine, you would pretty much have to go by body size to judge a live deer. That said, I would say that second picture would be a mimimum 2 1/2. I remember seeing some incredible 6 point racks from 4 1/2 year old deer in Maine. When I used to hunt there the average deer taken was 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old I believe.

We don't grow big Racked deer in Maine. There are some exceptions about a 120" deer is big for the areas I hunt. The first pic looks to me to be about 1.5 years old. He's got a small body and small almost doe like neck. The second pic looks to be a bigger deer. I'm guessing 2 to 3 years old. He's got a larger body but still a slender neck. The big deer in the aera really show it through the shoulders and neck. These are still fun to look at and watch. I find I learn more about deer by letting them pass and watching them than I do when I shoot them.

With the abundance of doe in the aera these guy's will get the pass this year. I'll take what meat I need from the doe in hopes of a shooter next year. If you're unlucky enough to get paired with me for the contest it's not looking good. I havn't seen a shooter yet this year. LOL

I did catch another on my cam but it was dark and he was out of range and in the brush. You can clearly see his eye glowing and can just almost make out the rack. I wish I had set up 15 feet closer to the trail. I thnk I'd have got a better pic. I'll see if I can get my old man to email it to me and I'll post it.

Off the subject, where about do you live Bobco?

I live in the Great Lake region in NY. However, I have done much hunting in Northern Maine in the Allagash, region. I have also done canoe trips down the Allagash, and St. John rivers. As well as making trips to Baxter. I have done the Bar Harbor thing, but like having a little space.

Maine is an incredible State, and I wouldn't mind living there during retirement, that is if the locals don't mind too much. I think you know what I mean! ;)

The people of Maine are great, and can be very friendly. I'd imagine you visited durring the touist months and we do loose orur patients but the economy depends on it.

Are you in Oswego co? I use to fish salmon river with my father when I was younger. I'd love to get back but the runs falls right in the middle of bow season[:@]. I may have to make it back for stealhead in the winter. I'd love to live in the Pulaski area but don't think the locals would like it either;)

It seems that people who live in heaven get a bit testy when others want to share heaven with them

There is a lot of truth in that.

Nope, I'm in Erie County. I use to Salmon fish quite a bit, especially back when we were able to snag. But I did catch quite a few trout as well with the "force feeder", so I could see the DEC's point when they stopped that. I did most of the Salmon fishing in small tributaries off Lake Erie and odd Ontario that were not too crouded and did pretty well. Oak Orchard and Lewiston used to be great, but got to the point of being concerned of crossing lines, especially with a "fish on!".

Oh the in the reference towards the Maine people. I didn't mean anything negative. But tI just got the feeling, especially in small towns, toward "outsiders" moving in.

You are right about the run falling right in the middle of bow season. Seems like the only time I get to fish is if I'm tagged out. Which happens, but not too often.

I didn't think you did. that was my point about people in heaven not wanting to share it. Maine is growing and the reclusive people of the state aren't real happy about it. oh well, Say la vie.
