RE: Article: Will your safety harness kill you?
One should always place the strap high enough on the tree that it is taught when you sit on the seat. You cannot fall out of the stand. I learned this the hard way. This is my post from another thread:
You want funny? When I got my first hangon stand I put it on a tree about 4 feet off the ground in my backyard, just to get familiar with putting it on the tree and to see how comfy and whatnot. Well, it turns out that they give you a free safety harness, so I put that on to get familiar. So after sitting in the stand and talking to my Dad, who was standing there, I decided it was time to get down. I forgot I had the harness on and figured it would be easiest to just jump down. I jumped and right before my feet hit the gound the slack drew tight and all you hear is a big moan from me getting the wind knocked out. To add insult to injury I then swung around the tree and bashed off it several times. If you ever fall out of your treestand, your harness will save you from serious injury but it will still hurt a plenty. Trust me! |

There's a chance that a seatbelt in your car will kill you but I still wear mine. $#!^ happens and when it's time to go it's time to go. I've taken some mean fall rock climbing and managed to survive, I only hope I should be as lucky while hunting.

RE: Article: Will your safety harness kill you?
In the past and in the future i always put my strap as to where if i was to fall i would not fall past the platfprm of my stand , meaning keep it tight . now i am getting a little older and i made a visit to Bass Pro in Charlotte NC and bought me one of the new Hunters Safety Vest it is a full body harness that is made inside a vest . it cost a little ( 100.00 )
but it sure bets falling out of a tree and killing yourself |

RE: Article: Will your safety harness kill you?
I looked it up for ya davidw... found it in a stack of issues that stay in the throne room... :D The one I read was publised the April 2004 issue of Bowhunting World Magazine, Volume 53, No.2. It was only a two pager, yet informative, starting on page 66. I would type it all here, but I don't type exceptionally fast. To answer thenuge15, the very last line of the article reads... "suspension for more than 5 minutes can be fatal." The editors of this article - Bill Weems and Phil Bishop, note that it was condensed from the March 2003 issue of Occupational Health & Safety, with permission from the Stevens Publishing company. OSHA. I really do think it's something all climbers should know about. Oh, and I too like Twisted Arrow, use a vest harness. They keep everything from getting tangled up, which make wearing just like putting on your overcoat. Very nice.

RE: Article: Will your safety harness kill you?
I have another question, I have the safety harness that comes with the lone wolf and the shoulder straps are not adjustable. They are built for someone a lot taller than me and they are loose and could easily fall of my shoulders. Is there any way to fix this? Could this be a problem? Also I know your supposed to have the safety harness tight when your sitting so it doesn't let you fall too much, but do you move it higher if you stand up that last 30 minutes of prime time?
