Bow string slap (Ouch!!)

Hey there....

I was out shooting my old PSE bow out in the back yard at the Black Hole target and basically enjoying myself....

Word to the wise: NEVER let yourself get distracted and answer the wife, who just so happens to come to the back door/porch right at the exact moment that you press the release! [:o]

I got whacked on my right inside forearm (I'm a lefty), and got a nice 1" - 1 1/2" long welt! Ouch! [&:][:'(] The #2315 arrow sailed about 6" wide left and low of the Black Hole target too.

'Fess up everyone..... How many times have YOU been whacked by the bow string?

Honestly......been shooting "real bows" since 83' and I've never hit my arm while shooting. Not sure I ever even remember slapping a jacket sleeve either?

Just lucky?;)

Been awhile since I slapped my arm, but getting distracted by the wife or the kids I'v had some nice misses. I use an old round, bout 5' I guess picknick table for a back stop up against a stone retaining wall. Got a few field points buried in that table & 3 or 4 so far that hit the wall, pushes the insert & head back a good 3" into the shaft.
It amazes me how it can be going so well, shooting nice groups, everything falling into place without even thinking about it, & then someone tries talking to me & I fall apart. [:'(] I pretty much just stop now when someone comes out. Gets expensive shootin rocks. :D

I can relate to that... seems almost as if it's a conspiracy. Wives must know when we have a good practice session going then, BAM! They shout out the window at the most inopportune time. *DOINK - a bow kickstand is born. [&:]

Sounds like you either have bad form or your draw is too long to me, might want to get that checked out...

When I first started with my compound I hit my arm about 3 times, not real bad but bad enough to make me check things over, before I realized I had the wrong draw module on my bow. Installed the shorter one and haven't hit it since.

This is actually the second time I did such a thing. This time was more my fault than the first time. The first time I did it, my bottom wheel exploded on my PSE and it whacked me. This picture is the aftermath of my release going off at about half draw. When I pull my bow back I torque my arm in and that is why it hit so hard.

Sure is pretty huh?

I would say in the last two years....35-40 times. Two months ago I shortened my draw lenght and out of 120 shots now I might hit once. It really does hurt, and trust me, you don't want to do it on your hunting jacket when shooting a dear...You'll shoot 18 to 20" low!

Good Luck!

Geez IL that looks more like a shark attack.[:o]

Mathewsboy,
get your welted arm to a pro shop and find out why you are hitting it so consistently. Something is wrong with your form or drawlength or both.

My 1st season hunting I used a recurve and every time I released it would slap me on the fore arm. Hurt a bit but the colors and welp line were kinda cool.;)

I have done it. But it's been so long ago that I don't remeber it very well.

I used to do it until I wised up and started shooting open handed, I am sure one day I will do it again, but I sure hope not! Butch that is a nasty welt, I never had one even close to that!

I had a string break break once right at the end where it connects to the cam while I was at full draw. The string ended up wrapping around the botom of my bow and snapped my arm like a whip. I got a little target panic after that. [:@]

Luckily it's been quite some time since I've done this. I remember in high school we had archery in gym and a friend had Hoyt with an overdraw. He sai d" go ahead and shoot it" with no other instruction that that. The results were't pretty. No where near as bad as Il bow Man. Damn that must have hurt!;)

Taz, that picture is not my arm (Thank God!) [&:] Someone else had their bow cam wheel explode on them. I just have a basic red welt that looks like two postage stamps end-to-end. It's fading rapidly, so it doesn't bother me.

I always shoot open handed, but, this particular time, my wife came out the back door and said something about going to the store. I just remember hearing a "Hey, honey", just as a hit my release. [:-] I think I grabbed the bow hard, torqued it, and also turned to look at my wife, all in the matter of 0.32 seconds. S-L-A-P!!! is what I felt down my arm, as I was horribly out of position and startled all at the same time.

Never have with a compound, but i did shoot a crossbow for the first time in december when my partner got it for chrstmas and he didnt know anything about bows, and apparently neither did i, i shot it with my fingers a little too high and that string with 150lbs went across my 3 fingers, and remember it was cold outside. that was a pain i will never forget!:( It hurt hard, and it hurt for hours i could have cried.
