I was bit by a water moccasin about 8 years ago while conducting military training in NC.

I wasn't playing with it nor did I step on it. Water moccasin can be very agressive and territorial. If I hunted in moccasin country, I would wear the boots.

I've seen more snakes while fishing then I have during archery season. I've found that in most cases, if you give them room they won't bother you. Stepping on or near one can be quite the different story. Colonel Sam Colt to the rescuuuuuuuueee! [8D]

I also live in Southeast Texas, and while clearing a couple of shooting lanes on my lease last week I stepped right on top of a cottonmouth. I was wearing my Rock Low Country boots just for that reason. They worked great thankfully

My mother-in-law can't believe I truck around in the woods, without at least a pistol.

When walking into your stand, hopefully your almost at stalking pace. Slow movement and they won't strike. A fast movement next to them and they sense heat with their tongue, and it is on! Stepping right on one will get you bit!

Copperheads are the ones I worry about, when trucking through the woods to check the scene, and prepare for deer season. They have killed 6 copperheads in their garage, and one 8 foot rattler that was huge. They walked right by it 2 times, within a foot, thinking it was a dirty towel. They blew the sheetrock out of their garage with that one and some 4 shot!!LOL!!


Sportsmans Guide had Browning 17" snake proof rubber boots at a really reasonable price below $50.

Instead of the boots, consider buying a pair of snake proof chaps. They run about $60 and unless you are in a bad place you can wear your normal comfortable boots. They really do a good job in protecting your legs from briars also.

Yeah, I got bit once. Poor snake died in less than an hour;)

Seriously, I agree with the rubber boot thing. Had a big copperhead strike my foot once, didn't even scuff my boot though. And mine go up to my knees. Other than that, I usually do good by watching where I put my feet and hands!:)

I been bitten a few times but never by a snake I surprised in the wild but it was always a snake I was tring to catch or a snake that bit through a pillow case. I use to be an amature herptilogist in capturing reptiles for the state of florida back in the 70's and 80's and been nailed by 4 rattlesnakes and 1 cottonmouth and 1 gator in my reptile career. The cottonmouth bite was the worse as infection set in on my left index finger and just about had my left hand amputated but I do have a left index finger that is there but its like a dead finger with no feeling present. I use to use the durango snake proof boots that had a bronze mesh inside the lining, these boots worked as I would pin a many of mocassins and rattlers by stepping on them and pen them down until I could get a snake hook to pen there head down, I could actually feel the psi of the bite assicioated with a diamond back bite but not so bad with moccassins. As far as using rubber boots go, get yourself a hyperdermic needle and see if the rubber boot will stop the needle from penetrating, if it doesn't stop a hyperdermic needle it won't stop a snake bite. The moccasin/cottomouth, rattlesnake and copperhead are a hemotoxin venom and attacks the blood cells in your body and death is very rare any more but it is accompanied usually by amputation/and or severe tissue damage in the vacinity of the bite. Snake boots will give you added confidence to hunt areas or follow a blood trail when in snake country, especially when you can't see where you step, the only disadvantage is maybe the weight, but toughen up, you can overcome that, as opposed to a bite, it feels like a hot knife working its way to your heart, kinda like thousands of bee stings. Don't take a chance, get yourself the boots if in poisonous snake country. ;) Bobby
