Whats you limit?
Just wanting get a fill on what ever one`s limit is on taking a buck? How big does a buck need to be before you try in take him and why? I know this will all be different due to the regins we all hunt.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
I like to hold out for 115' and up. In my part of the country that is a very respectable bow buck. I have been known to lower my standards, especially when hunting public land.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
My best (that I never had offically scored) is a 10 point in the 120 range. I would shoot another in the range if the shot oresented itself. This is considered a very large deer for the areas I hunt. I can only think of a couple deer that were killed that I have seen personally that were bigger and taken from the same area.
120 class and bigger is a shooter in my book. If I were hunting in the big buck belt I'd probably hold out for a larger animal but not in Maine.;) |
RE: Whats you limit?
I live in western NY in the Southren Tier area. We have one of the highest deer population and total deer taken during the hunting season. Here a 12 point is considered the big one. I personally try to hold out for a nice symetrical 8 pointer if one is in the area. I hunt mostly public land.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
In general I try to wait for something with at least 8 points, and a spread out to his ears. Of course if a massive 7 pt with 14" G2's and 8" bases and only a 14" spread walks by, I wouldn't pass him up. :D
|
RE: Whats you limit?
22"+ spread with heavy mass.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
I only get to take a few hunting trips a year so I don't get too picky. 125-130" gross and up= Me slingin an arrow! :)

RE: Whats you limit?
My limit is waiting for any deer to walk past my stand LOL

RE: Whats you limit?
I have to quickly estimate if its going to make the book....125. Its hard to do quickly and sometimes you only have a few seconds to decide. I shot one without being able to estimeate is, but when all of a sudden its their, you get that shot of adreniline and it takes your breath away, SHOOT IT! And I did!
Good Luck! |
RE: Whats you limit?
I would say 125+ but 115 would be good too, considering that is a GOOD buck from where i come from...
|
RE: Whats you limit?
That last three bucks I shot were 130, 124 and 123
|
RE: Whats you limit?
anything legal here in pa, but if its early in the season, i might hold back from shooting that little 6 point. even with the antler restrictions, i know people who still shoot anything that moves so if i don't shoot it someone else will. Like this past year, i was hunting a swamp in rifle season and had a small buck walk within 15 yards of me. i counted 3 legal points on his one side and a spike on his other. he sat walking and feeding in front of me for like 15 minutes then finally ran off. i heard a single shot in the direction he ran off so i was assuming they were shooting at him. just goes to show you, that here in pa, any legal buck is down or someone else will get it. i am trying to hold off more now but still, sometimes toward the end of bow season, that 6 point looks like he has 150" of horn on him:D

RE: Whats you limit?
Trapper_Hunter........I like your standards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Luck! |
RE: Whats you limit?
I Only shoot deer that are in bow range....
|
RE: Whats you limit?
Over the years I have set some real high standerds for myself I will only shoot a deer or elk that has lost all of its spots. and it is still breathing:D
But this year the state has raised my standerds a little for me. For deer in most units (all the ones that I hunt it) it has gone from a hair tag to forked horn or better. But this is ok with me I like shooting bucks more because you not only get meat but you get the bonus bragging antlers. |
RE: Whats you limit?
Four or more points on one side, at least as wide as his ears, and preferably at least 3 years old.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
5 inches in length. Some areas theres a 6 pt. rule. I shoot whatever is legal.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
Well considering I have not killed a buck with a bow yet, any buck that gives me a good shot, with a gun it is a whole different story, with the exception of the biggest 6 point I have ever seen in 40+ years of hunting (no brow tines), 8 points or better, unless like last year it is an old buck on the down hill side.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
Something that scores around 110".

RE: Whats you limit?
Depends on where I'm hunting and what else I've taken. If I go to NY and am hunting public land with my buddies... we whack 'em. If I'm hunting here in Maryland it depends on the property and what I've already whacked. If I'm some place like I Ohio like 3 years ago or some place that holds a special quality of deer... it's got to be one of the biggest deer I've ever shot. In Ohio 3 years ago I already had 6 or 7 deer. I passed up 6 bucks and 3 of them the last 30 minutes of my last day that I would have shot anywhere else. I was content to blow some tags off and go home empty handed. When I left the woods that night my nephew told me he wishes I had shot one. He has a friend whose wife can't eat red meat except for venison or something wild like that. Some kind of condition. He would have loved to have had an extra deer to provide the woman. All he had to do was tell me and I know an 8 point that would have died at 12 steps.

RE: Whats you limit?
When i am hunting here in my home state ( NC ) i shoot all deer that get into my effective range , but last season i went on my first outta state hunt in Ohio ( public land ) and took a 147 inch 12 point at 37 yards. that deer dressed out at 240 lbs he had a
19 3/8 inch inside spread and is now listed in the POPE & YOUNG RECORD BOOK. all i can say about limit , it is what ever makes the hunter happy . |
RE: Whats you limit?
I my self try to wait for a good 8 pt. or better. But it really depends on how i fill at that moment. I mite settle for for a little less?
|
RE: Whats you limit?
If its brown it DOWN.
:D |
RE: Whats you limit?
In ohio 8 point or bigger in PA. and WV. any leagle buck
|
RE: Whats you limit?
On public lands I try to estimate the age and take anything over 3.5 years of age (for a buck). Back home in Ohio I look for spread and mass and pass up any bucks that still have milk on their lips.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
Hair or better.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
Well I'm only on my forth year of hunting and I have shot 4 bucks, so I'm still not that picky. While huting I've only seen probably 10-12 bucks in my life so I shot a good amount of them;) At this point in my life I shoot any deer with antlers. After I get a dozen or so bucks under my belt I wil start to get picky.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
5X5 up with good mass and over 30 inches wide.
Elkshed |
RE: Whats you limit?
Good mass and tine length... the spread is not that critical to me if these two factors are present. I prefer a mature buck over a youngster that has a nice rack. I try hard to let the ones with potential go... unless it's a good buck on the last day.
|
RE: Whats you limit?
If it's inside 40 yards your mine. LOL
|
RE: Whats you limit?
i try for older deer, but sometimes it just dont happen.if i had a dollar for ever flock of ducks i didnt call the shot on,well,i've learned my lesson
